Deputies responded to a three-vehicle crash at 4:15 p.m. Oct. 16 at U.S. Highway 10 and County Road QQ in the town of Oak Grove between a 2003 MBW 325, driven by
Abenezer Yegezu Bekele, 22, Farmington, Minn.; a 2015 Honda VT750 motorcycle, driven by James Earl Schwan, 59, Houlton; and a 2009 Dodge Ram 1500, driven by Trista Allison Duffy, 35, Prescott. Bekele was traveling eastbound on Highway 10, while Schwan was stopped in traffic waiting for another vehicle to make a left-hand turn onto County Road QQ. Duffy was heading westbound on Highway 10. Bekele approached the intersection and performed an evasive maneuver, going left of the center line into oncoming traffic, to avoid hitting Schwan. Bekele struck the driver’s side rear of Schwan’s motorcycle and the right passenger side of Duffy’s truck, who also tried to avoid impact, overturned and struck a traffic sign post. Bekele’s BMW landed on its roof in the north ditch and started on fire. The motorcycle came to rest on Highway 10’s south shoulder, while Duffy’s truck ended up in the north ditch facing south. Bekele, who wore a seat belt, was transported by helicopter to Regions Hospital with suspected serious injuries. Schwan, who wore a full-face helmet, boots, jacket and long pants, reported no injuries. Duffy and her 5-year-old passenger wore seat belts and were transported by ambulance to Regions Hospital with possible injuries. The motorcycle had minor damage, but the other two vehicles were towed due to disabling damage.
