One in custody after downtown RF standoff

RIVER FALLS – River Falls Police Department issued a warning on social media at 8:49 a.m. Oct. 20, asking the public to stay away from the 100 block of North Main Street downtown River Falls due to a person who barricaded themselves.

Later that day, Police Chief Gordon Young issued the following news release: River Falls officers responded to the 100 block of North Main Street this morning after receiving a report of a person breaking household items and screaming that he was going to harm people. The caller believed the male may be armed with a handgun.

In an abundance of caution, police issued an advisory to people in the immediate area and limited traffic adjacent to the building. This incident was concluded after approximately three hours.

The subject was believed to be having a mental health episode and is being held on an emergency detention. The Police Department appreciates the community’s patience and cooperation while the incident was resolved.
