Robert Emmett, the son of Howard and Mabel (Meyers) Metcalf, was born on August 25, 1938, in East Grand Forks, Minnesota. Following his graduation from Sacred Heart High School, Bob enlisted in the Army National Guard then later went into Active Duty. Bob held many positions throughout his life in the Army National Guard and retired as AGR in August 1998. On August 28, 1981, Bob was united in marriage to Dianne Carter in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.
After completing his first Active Duty assignment, Bob returned to East Grand Forks where he began his longtime career in law enforcement. He truly enjoyed being able to drive the Hastings Football team to their games and the opportunity to take many over-the-road trips in the motor coach. Outside of work, Bob enjoyed watching Minnesota Vikings games, drinking a good beer, pheasant hunting with his dog Rosie, traveling, and boating on the St. Croix. He especially enjoyed traveling with family and wintering in Hawaii and South Padre Island, Texas, with Dianne for many years.
Throughout his careers, Bob was actively involved in many organizations, most notably: The Enlisted Association of National Guard of the United States where he was privileged to serve in many roles, the American Legion Post 47 in Hastings, where he was a Past Commander as well as serving in other positions, VFW Lyle Russell Post 1210 in Hastings, the Police Officer’s Association of Minnesota where he served as President for two years during his many years of service in law enforcement, FBI National Academy, and St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church where he and Dianne were longtime members.
