By Reagan Hoverman

The baseball and softball seasons in Pierce County are in full swing and Ellsworth softball and baseball, River Falls softball, Prescott baseball, and Elmwood/Plum City baseball and softball have all been competing throughout the last week of April.

The Ellsworth baseball team has dropped to 1

7 after an 8

2 loss on the road against Baldwin Woodville on Thursday, April

28. The loss was Ellsworth’s fifth in a row and seventh of the

2022 season.

As of Monday, May 2, Ellsworth is 1

6 in Middle Border Con ference action this season and is in seventh place in the standings, leading only the Somerset Spartans which remain winless for the

2022 season in Middle Border action.

The next game on the schedule for Ellsworth is its second matchup of the year against Prescott. That game is on Tuesday, May 3, and is slated to begin at 5 p.m.

Ellsworth softball wins two of last three

The Ellsworth softball team improved to 3

4 for the 2022 sea

son as the Panthers won two of its last three games including one contest against Somerset and an 18 0 blowout victory against Amery.

Despite struggling against non conference opponents such as the Hudson Raiders, Ellsworth has strung together a couple of impressive performances against Middle Border Conference op

ponents.

That includes the most recent win against the Amery Warriors and an important conference victory against Prescott less than three weeks ago. The Panthers have shown flashes of greatness but have yet to put it all together more than a few times this sea

son.

The next game on the schedule for Ellsworth is on Tuesday, May 3, when the Panthers host Baldwin Woodville in a 5 p.m. game.

Prescott baseball defeats Amery 2

1

The Prescott Cardinals baseball team improved to 6

5 for the season, including a 4

2 record in Middle Border Conference games with a 2

1 pitcher’s duel win over Amery on Monday, May

2.

The low scoring victory at home against Amery ended the Cardinals’ two

game losing stream that dated back to Thursday, April 28, which included defeats against Osceola 5

6 and La Crosse Logan 10

11.

Prescott’s 4

2 record in the Middle Border is tied for third place with the Chieftains of Osceola and trails Baldwin Woodville (4

1) and Altoona (6

0). The Cardinals have an im

portant stretch of the schedule coming up with games against Ellsworth on the road on Tuesday, May 3, and Baldwin Woodville at home on Thursday, May 5. Both of those games will begin at 5 p.m.

River Falls softball swept by Rice Lake in season series The River Falls Wildcats softball team was swept in the season series by the Rice Lake Warriors after two games on Tuesday, April 26, and Thursday, April 28. The losses dropped the Wild

cats’ 2022 record to 2

11 for the season and 0

7 in Big Rivers Conference action.

The losses against Rice Lake, by scores of 15

5 and 23

6, kept River Falls winless in conference games this season. The Big Rivers is as talented as ever this year, with programs such as Chippewa Falls (7

0) and New Richmond (7

1) dominating the rest of the Big Rivers teams.

The Wildcats are out of the race for a conference title but will have a chance to bounce back and get their first win in league play on Tuesday, May 5, when they travel to Eau Claire Memorial a team with a 1

7 record in conference play. That game is slated to begin at 5 p.m.

Elmwood/Plum City baseball defeats Clayton/Turtle Lake 6

4, secures first win of season

The Elmwood/Plum City Wolves’ baseball team secured its first win of the season with a 6

4 win over Clayton/Turtle Lake on Friday, April 29. With the win, the wolves improved to 1

5 for the season, which includes the 0

5 record in Dunn St. Croix Con

ference play.

The Dunn St. Croix Conference once again has several im

pressive teams that have consistently outplayed the rest of the competition. For the 2022 season, Elk Mound (7

0) and Boyceville (6

1) have separated themselves as the dominant pro

grams this year.

The Wolves will have a chance to get their second win of the season and the first in conference action on Monday, May 5, when they travel to Glenwood City. That game is slated to begin at 5 p.m.

Elmwood/Plum City softball win shootout over Glen

wood City 11

The Elmwood/Plum City softball team improved to 2

6 over

all for the season, including a 1

5 record in Dunn St. Croix Con

ference action after its shootout 11

10 win at home against Glenwood City on Friday, April 29.

Senior Hannah Baier has been the standout star for the Wolves this season, as she leads Elmwood/Plum City in RBIs (10), aver

age (.515), and pitcher wins (2) for the season. The Wolves’ of

fensive explosion in their seven run first inning against Glenwood City propelled the team to an early lead that they held for the rest of the game.

The Wolves have had a slow start to the season, but with a large slate of conference games on the horizon, there is time for Elmwood/Plum City to start to turn the season around. The next opportunity for that is on Thursday, May 5, when the Wolves travel to Elk Mound for a 5 p.m. showdown with the second best team in the conference.
