Free Property Fraud Alert for Chippewa County Residents

Chippewa County Register of Deeds Melanie McManus addressed the Stanley City Council at the council meeting on March 4 to speak on a free early warning system provided by the Chippewa County to notify residents of possible property fraud. The fraud occurs when someone records a document that at the register of deed’s office making it look at if they own the home or property. The true property owner is then faced with a lengthy hassle trying to prove the fraudulent activity.
Under the Property Fraud Alert system, McManus stated that as documents get recorded and indexed if a document gets fraudently recorded with your name, you will be notified in one or two days, much sooner than in years past.
“We’ve had it since 2012, we’re starting to see it happen in Wisconsin,” she mentioned. McManus stated that Property Fraud Alert is a free service for any property owners in Chippewa County.
“I would highly recommend if you are a property owner, sign up for this,” McManus remarked.
“Signing up for this service won’t stop the fraud from happening. It just lets you know if it does.”
