Quorum questions looming?

Two council candidates still needed for April ballot

The Common Council of the City of Stanley has nine members, counting the mayor. Should no one step forward to fill empty spots on the ballot, it could have just seven, come post-election. With five members needed for quorum, that means more than two no shows to any given council meetings as of April 17 (when new members will be sworn in) means a ‘no go’ for that night’s council business. Write-in candidates have until March 31 to register, with more information at city hall. So where are the council seats in question and who’s eligible?

Ward 3, along with Wards 1 and 8, which are combined. Ward 3 is bordered on the south by Maple Street, west by 330th, north by Tenth Avenue, and a border embracing the west sides of Emery, Broadway, and McKnight Street, along with the north side of Fifth Avenue between Emery and Broadway and north side of First Avenue between Broadway and McKnight. Should you live in this 8-sided polygon, you’re eligible.

As to Wards 1 and 8, it embraces the south side of Tenth Avenue generally, being bordered on the east by 370th with an extension for ward 8 from Seventh Avenue west, embracing Dodge and McKenzie. Turning west at First Avenue/Willow Road, Ward 8 joins to Ward 1, then turning north on Grant Street, west at Fourth Avenue, north once more at Jefferson, West at Sixth Avenue, and North on Park, embracing the east side to Seventh Avenue, where it turns to meet the western border of Ward 1. Live within these boundaries, and you’re eligible to fill the vacant ballot spot.

As to the city elections more generally, Jason Meyer is seeking re-election in Ward 2 and Laurie Foster is seeking re-election in Wards 4 through 7 as well as 9, these being combined similar to Wards 1 through 8.
