Winger Construction builds new shop in East Business Park
Winger Construction is on to bigger and better things! With a groundbreaking at the new location two months ago, Winger Construction is waste no time as the new building construction is well underway. Joe Winger, who has owned Winger Construction for the past 21 years with his wife Jennifer, explained that the new steel siding building will house a shop, showroom/office, and storage.
Jim Jones named as winner of December’s SCA High Five Award
Stanley is made up of community members who want to make Stanley better, leading the pack is Jim Jones. From being a long time business owner to being a team player in many organizations—Jim can always be seen helping with the Lions Club events and cheese curd stand.
Game time at the Target Center!
Taking their respective game to Minneapolis, the Orioles and the Cardinals faced off at the Target Center Dec. 30. The Orioles came away with a 63-52 victory, with Henry Hoel reaching 1,000 career points.

Businesses connect at Coffee and Commerce event held at Lube Suppliers Store
Members of the Stanley Area Chamber of Commerce were treated to coffee, juice, and delicious donuts at the Coffee and Commerce morning event sponsored by Lube Suppliers Store on January 4th. Reestablished in 2020, the Stanley Area Chamber of Commerce organized Coffee and Commerce, a local monthly gathering that gives local business owners an opportunity to connect and share ideas in a relaxed setting.
Write-in campaign for mayor as no one files candidacy papers
Up for a challenge and think you have what it takes?
Now’s your opportunity. With the spring election filing deadline passed as of last week and no candidate for mayor, a write-in contest will be waged among those looking to fill the shoes of outgoing mayor Al Haas, number 33 in the top post.
Ben Wald is approved to First and Eighth Wards Council seat
Stanley native Ben Wald was approved to a seat on the City Council last Tuesday evening at the January 2nd Stanley City Council meeting. Wald will be holding the position of First and Eight Wards Alderperson until the spring election in 2025 after it was vacated by Joe Davison in October of 2023.

Henry Hoel new all time Oriole point scorer at S-B
Sue Kolpien, mother of former record holder Mike Kolpien, presented Henry Hoel with the game ball from Monday night’s game against Stratford-Marawood. Hoel scored 14 points during the game thus improving on Kolpien’s record by three points, for 1,068 career points thus far.
Stanley-Boyd hears mixed reviews from public at FAC meeting
Board later opts to put Option 2 before voters, seeking approval for $23 million in general obligation bonds
Holding a special board meeting Monday, Jan. 15, the Stanley-Boyd Board of Education opted to go with Option 2 for the building referendum, meaning that voters will get to choose whether or not to approve $23 million in school building improvements at the April 2 spring election.
Prior to the Monday meeting, the board heard from residents at a Facilites Advisory Committee (FAC) meeting on Jan. 10.
Zach Vircks inducted into WCCCA Hall of Fame
A Stanley-Boyd native has just made the Wisconsin Cross Country Coaches Association (WCCCA) Hall of Fame—as an athlete.
Zach Vircks, a Stanley-Boyd Class of 2003 graduate, was inducted into the WCCCA Class of 20234 Hall of Fame on Jan. 5 at the Embassy Suites in Brookfield, Wisconsin, during the organization’s Hall of Fame Banquet and Awards Ceremony.

Retirement party for Ron Haas at Stanley Community Center
Stanley area residents will have a chance to say ’thank you’ to Ron Haas Feb. 4, a retirement party being held from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the Stanley Community Center.
Haas, best known for owning Martino’s Restaurant, has turned over the reigns to new owners John and Megan Junker, whom he wishes well.
Police department considering drone acquisition
The Stanley Police Department could be getting a new sidekick, pending further developments.
“We are still exploring the idea of acquiring a drone for city use,” Stanley Police Chief Lance Weiland told the Council in his regular mid-January report.
Chapman Campground to see rate increases for 2024 camping season
Winter temperatures may be in full force, but thoughts of warmer days were in the air at the Jan. 15 Stanley Council meeting where the council made changes to the Chapman Park Campground reservations and rates for the 2024 season.
Gone are the weekly and extended stay rates that have increased from $20 per night to $40 for electric sites

Stanley Area Chamber of Commerce seeks to revitalize Broadway
Highlights past success at annual meeting
The Stanley Area Chamber of Commerce held their annual meeting on Jan. 23 at Debbie’s on Broadway where members enjoyed delicious food and desserts. After the meal, Chamber President Ron Haas opened the Tuesday night meeting welcoming everyone and thanking them for attending.
Aspirus Stanley looks to help fill void left by departing hospitals
With HSHS recently announcing its exit with Prevea from Western Wisconsin and both Sacred Heart of Eau Claire and St. Joseph’s Hospital of Chippewa Falls closing, the news likely leaves a question in the minds of many: what about healthcare?
Not everyone has left, with Aspirus Health among the providers still in the area. We put questions to Aspirus on what they offer and received answers.

Local police, fire, and EMS respond to coming hospital closures
Sacred Heart and St. Joseph’s are closing, sending shock waves across the Chippewa Valley. With no exact date set as of yet, the closure could come by March 23, if not sooner. So how might it impact area services? Local fire, police, and EMS are hard at work to find solutions.
No one fights alone
Community comes together in show of support for Lakken Burzynski
No one fights alone, and to that end, the Stanley-Boyd community came together Friday night to stand with Lakken Burzynski, a childhood brain cancer, who was diagnosed with glioma this past July.
Taking place at the Friday night boys varsity game between Stanley-Boyd and Thorp, Burzynski was presented with an envelope containing upwards of $6,000 in donation money at the Friday night game by Orioles head coach (and Lakken’s uncle) Dakota Nichols, the Orioles and Cardinals both warming up in Team Lakken t-shirts designed by Lakken’s older sister Taylor.
Miss Stanley visits Saint Paul Winter Carnival
Current Miss Stanley Arizona Bergeron represented the City of Stanley as she participated in the Saint Paul Winter Carnival for a fun filled weekend in Minnesota. The Saint Paul Winter Carnival is the oldest winter festival in the United States, dating back to 1886.

February 15, 2024
Community Center rental price to rise
Construction season will soon be here, and the Stanley City Council is gearing up for the 2nd Avenue project to begin. At the February 5th meeting council members motioned to accept the lowest bid from Haas Sons Inc. for the Second Avenue Project as recommended by Ayres at their base bid amount of $491,583.61 with Alderperson Josh Seidl abstaining.
Donation to Senior Lock-in
Stanley American Legion Post 112 and VFW Post 2711 have donated $500 to the senior lock-in.
S-B Class of 1977 grad active in Hollywood
A Stanley-Boyd Class of 1977 graduate has a new movie out--not her first.
Lisa Long, who served as Miss Stanley in high school, plays Eileen Stratton in “The Wedding in the Hamptons,” a romantic comedy set in New York.

All Day 4K coming to Stanley-Boyd
All Day 4K is coming to Stanley-Boyd Schools.
Approved last December by the Board after being shelved for the pandemic, All Day 4K will officially be taking registration at the Boyd Learning Center on March 6 from 10:00 a.m to 8:00 p.m.
Mason Vait headed to State Spelling Bee
Stanley-Boyd eighth grader Mason Vait is going to state--for the spelling bee.
Competing at the CESA 10 Regional Spelling Bee Monday, Feb. 12, Vait outperformed over 42 other spellers to take third in the contest, held at the CESA 10 Conference Center in Chippewa Falls.
On to State for Oriole wrestlers!
With sectionals complete, Stanley-Boyd has three wrestlers headed to state this weekend. Senior Breckin Burzynski, freshman Anna Krizan, and sophomore Willy Graham will compete at the Kohl Center in Madison.

City hires CBS Squared Inc. to replant reed beds
The Stanley City Council decided to hire CBS Squared Inc. to plant the current empty reed bed at the wastewater treatment plant. In May of 2021, CWG of Constructed Wetland Group was paid $16,000 to plant the reed beds at the wastewater treatment plant. The plants that were purchased and planted never grew as they were intended to and the city has been left with an empty reed bed.
Elevated fire danger this spring
With little snow and warming temperatures, the spring wildfire season is expected to be especially active this year.
“With the abnormally low snow pack this winter the danger is high this early spring,” Stanley Fire Chief Korey Hagenson said. “The DNR is predicting a very active fire season this year.”
Welcome back from State!
Welcoming home wrestlers from State this Sunday, a convoy with Stanley Police, Fire, and well wishers made its way from Stanley Bar and Bowl down Broadway. then turning at Fourth Avenue to head to the school.

Two vehicle crash results in transport to Mayo
A two vehicle crash on Sunday morning has resulted in the transport of one individual by ambulance and towing of both vehicles from the accident scene.
Taking place Sunday, March 3 before 11 a.m., the crash at Fourth and Broadway resulted from failure to stop at a stop sign, resulting in damage to both vehicles.
Lew presents on math and reading
Taking time to appear before the Stanley-Boyd Area Schools Board Monday Feb. 26, Elementary Principal Dean Lew gave the latest on the AGR Report and test scores at Stanley-Boyd.
Board takes referendum outreach to residents
Go to where the voters are--and then answer their questions.
That’s the idea behind a series of information stops by school board members this month, as a referendum seeking district improvements is on the ballot April 2. The first stop was at the corner booth at McDonalds.

Henke seeks mayor post
Stanley residents have a candidate for mayor this April 2, and his name is Mike Henke.
Currently serving as Ward 3 alderman for city council, Henke will stand this spring for mayor as a registered write-in.
Council holds informational meeting on pending Second Avenue road work
The Stanley City Council held an informal meeting for Second Avenue residents and property owners at the City Hall Community room on March 4th. Buzzy Halterman, Diane Halterman, and Becca Johnson were the three property owners in attendance as Brian Lambert of Ayres and Associates explained the upcoming reconstruction process and answered questions for the attendees, who were reassured by the Council that the construction cost was covered by a CDBG grant and the residents would not be charged.
Legion and VFW hold 9-Pin Tap
Coming together March 8 to March 10 at Tolley’s Bar and Bowl in Boyd, the Stanley and Boyd Legions together with the Stanley VFW hosted their once a year 9-Pin Tap, with 50/50 and a paddle raffle.
Assistance available for businesses affected by snowless winter
Snow is moisture, and with less of it this winter than most, a drought declaration by the USDA can be utilized to establish and consider small businesses aid for those businesses affected by the weather.

Red flag up as area enters ‘very high’ fire danger
Winter is officially done as of the March 19 equinox, but don’t expect an easy spring. A new season has emerged: ‘very high’ fire danger season.
Stanley enters agreement to meet DNR waste levels
On March 4, Eric Lynne with Donahue and Associates approached the Stanley City Council at the council meeting with wastewater operator Nick Martin with a contract to put together a trading plan that assists the wastewater treatment plant on achieving the current “very difficult” effluent limits.
Lynne explained that the wastewater treatment plant has to make a tight limit.
“In order to make it easier to achieve, the DNR allows us to trade credits elsewhere by doing good erosion control things elsewhere in the environment,” Lynne said.
Fixing the Cross at Our Savior’s Lutheran
In town Tuesday, March 12, Graphic House of LaCrosse took a hydraulic lift to make repairs to the steeple cross at Our Savior’s. With repairs being made as the Cross marks 53 years, the lighted beacon was first installed May 1971 in memory of Murnie Anderson.
Thorp Area Fire and Ambulance District hires Paul Skibbbie as full time Fire/EMS
The Thorp Area Fire and Ambulance District held a special meeting on March 12 to discuss and approve the hiring of a full time Fire/EMS Chief.
“We’ve talked about this for several years. It’s come to the point where we finally are going to have to make the move to do it,” said Thorp Area Fire Board President Tom Smasal. “It’s a long time coming.

Plan Commission rezones Ace Ethanol parcel
At the public hearing held on March 18th, Neill Kemmet, general manager at Ace Ethanol, LLC, addressed the Plan Commission of the City of Stanley to request that property parcel #22905-2634-06500000 owned by Ace Ethanol be rezoned from R-1 Residential to I-1 Industrial to match the rest of the property that is currently owned.
Decision time for Stanley-Boyd
Heading to the polls April 2, voters in the Stanley-Boyd area will have a full ballot, a school referendum and several candidates both local and elsewhere. With city of Stanley voters heading to the Chapman Park Community Center and Boyd residents to the village hall, results are not without consequence.
Winter makes curtain call
Arriving in Boyd and Stanley this past week, winter made a late appearance with snowfall past the March 19 equinox, followed by several inches the night of Palm Sunday into Monday.

Thorp Town Board greenlights Town Hall appraisal
At the March 13th meeting, the Town of Thorp board members voted to allow Brad Mathison of Mathison Realty and Services to appraise the current Town of Thorp Hall and 1.99. acres of land at a cost of $200 for an estimate of what the property is worth.
Stanley-Boyd Music Department presents Spring Concert
After being rescheduled due to winter weather conditions, the Stanley-Boyd Music Department hosted the 5th through 12th Grade Spring Concert at the high school gym on March 26th.
Crossing guards soon?
Crossing guards could soon be coming to Stanley-Boyd Schools, on the west side.
“We’re looking at trying to find some adult crossing guards to monitor School Street out next to the bus garage or bike racks,” superintendent Jeff Koenig told the board. “That’s become a really--that intersection has gotten worse and worse through time.”
Fredrickson retires from Sunset Homes
Outgoing Sunset Homes Executive Director Linda Frederickson was presented March 28 with an award in appreciation for her 12 years of dedicated service to the residents of Sunset Homes. The award was presented in a dinner in her honor given at Kutzee’s Supper Club. Dan Huls is the new executive director as of April 1.
Local brothers plan to open new gaming business in Stanley
Local brothers Brady and Cody Junker hope to bring fun back to downtown Stanley with a new gaming store. Brady Junker, lead singer of the up-and-coming Brady Luke Band, is embarking on this business venture with his brother Cody, owner of Fireworks Liquidators in Cadott

Henke is mayor, other offices filled
A new mayor and empty ward seat. Such are among the takeaways from the April 2 spring primary, which saw Ward 3 Alderman Mike Henke succeed Al Haas as mayor Henke received 110 votes for mayor to 93 write-ins, with other names for mayor including Kevin Hendrickson (36 votes), Jody Halterman (16 votes), and Mark Fitzsimmons (10 votes).
SCA unveils splashpad designs at Coffee & Commerce
As the Stanley Community Association (SCA) hosted the Stanley Chamber of Commerce’s Coffee and Commerce event at the Community Center on April 4, they unveiled the designs for the new splashpad and playground that they are working to bring to Chapman Park and shared their plans to make the dream a reality. The new playground and splashpad will be built next to the tennis courts in Chapman Park with USA made products from Commercial Recreation Specialists.
Voters say ‘no’ to $23 in bond debt
A bad day for seeking increased school taxes--but not winter weather fans.
Headed to the polls amidst cold and snow on Tuesday April 2, Stanley-Boyd Area Schools District voters rejected a $23 million bond referendum--this rejection mirrored in the region by seperate referenda at Thorp and Cadott.

School Board reviews vote outcome at Board Conversation
The lingering impact of past school board decisions loomed large as the Stanley-Boyd Board of Education met Monday April 15 to consider the outcome of the April 2 referendum on building improvements.
Meeting in the high school library at 6:30 p.m., the school board was assembled to have its monthly conversation, and at the top of the list was the referendum results
Boyd Chamber plans for Ringelspiel Days
The monthly meeting of the Boyd Chamber of Commerce was held Tuesday, April 9 at 5:30 p.m. with the main topic of discussion being the upcoming Ringelspiel Days. The annual event will take place May 24, 25, and 26 at Lotz Park in Boyd.
Chippewa County 4-H Shooting Sports team takes first place in B B Gun championship
The Chippewa County 4-H Shooting Sports B B Gun team again took home the first place in the championship. Among those on the team this year were Michael Mayer, Kylee Seidl, Madelyn Wahl, Colton Bowe, and Isaac Blum. Joe Tiry was the coach.

‘Vintage Views of Stanley’ takes readers on a journey through local history
At a special presentation at the Stanley Area Historical Museum on Monday evening, the Stanley Area Historical Society released “Vintage Views of Stanley--brought to life in color,” a new color photo book compiled by David D. Plummer in collaboration with the Stanley Area Historical Society.
City of Stanley served with lawsuit by local resident
A Stanley women served City of Stanley officials with a small claims lawsuit at the Stanley City
Council meeting on Monday, April 15.
Ruby Ann Birt, 206 E. 2nd Ave., alleges she’s been discriminated against and harassed by the city and is seeking $10,000.
There is no formal complaint attached with the action.
Town of Thorp board members reject all contractor bids, Chairman resigns
Emotions ran high as the Town of Thorp board met in a special meeting on April 16 to decide on a construction contractor for the future town hall and shop scheduled to begin construction in May. At the start of the meeting, held before the regular annual meeting, Chairman Jerry Jacks read the requirements regarding the acceptance of bids stating that the board must choose the lowest bidder who in this case is James Hickman of Hickman Buildings.

2024 Junior Prom Court!
Taking place Saturday, April 28 at the Barn on Stoney Hill was the Stanley-Boyd Prom. Among those on court were Cole Brenner, Jackson Gindt, King Riley Schad, Carter Isenberger, Jacob LaGrander, Makenna Schuebel, Isabella Goettl, Queen Syleen Seichter, Laney Fritz, and Mykel Wirtala.
Northwestern Bank Celebrates 25 years in Boyd
The Boyd branch will celebrate 25 years being part of Northwestern Bank on May 10, 2024

Summer reading programs kick off to fanfare May 3
Camp Read S’More, the Stanley-Boyd School District’s Summer library, kicked off its summer program at the D.R. Moon Memorial Library on Friday, May 3.
Mayor voices support for library expansion project
The Stanley Common Council is firmly behind the D.R. Moon Memorial Library--and the Mayor is on record about it.
Approved in the consent agenda items Monday, May 6, the letter by Mayor Mike Henke addressed to “fellow D.R. Moon supporters” declares support for the library expansion and historic restoration project.
Stanley Post Office hosts Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive on May 11
The United States Post Office in Stanley is ready to fight back against hunger in the community on Saturday, May 11. Partnering with the 2024 Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive, postal carriers will collect non-perishable food item donations that residents can leave at their mailboxes by 9 a.m. on Saturday and the Stanley Post Office will bring them to local food pantries to be distributed to those in need.

New Airpacks at Boyd-Edson-Delmar
The Boyd-Edson-Delmar Fire Department purchased 12 new airpacks recently. Following arrival of the new airpacks, the old ones were donated to a fire department in Honduras, having come from Thorp originally.
Graduates bid farewell to Stanley-Boyd May 10
The Stanley-Boyd Class of 2024 if out the school door.
Convening in the Stanley-Body High School gymnasium after a forecast of bad weather and intermittent rain Friday, 74 seniors said goodbye to Stanley-Boyd as they received diplomas at an indoor ceremony, before heading out to the larger world.
Second Avenue street reconstruction project likely to face extensions
The Stanley City Council held a Citizen Participation Hearing regarding the East Second Avenue Reconstruction for the 2024 Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) Public Facilities on Monday May 6 at city hall. Mayor Mike Henke updated the meeting attendees on the status of the CDBG Project with an overview of the activities completed and an update on the remaining activities to be completed.

Ringelspiel at Boyd this weekend!
Ringelspiel is back again
Making its debut this weekend, the festivities start with the crowning of Miss Boyd at the Boyd American Legion Hall Thursday, followed by three days of food fun, rides and family entertainment.
Miss Boyd crowning to take place Friday
It’s the event that officially starts Ringelspiel--crowning Miss Boyd.
Taking place May 24 at Lotz Park, the crowning ceremony will see Delani Mercier pass the crown to Syleen Seichter, there being just one candidate this year.
Depot Pavilion rising at Soo Line Park
Now shingled to keep out the rain, the Soo Line Pavilion is progressing quickly. The 1,800 square foot seasonal pavilion will provide outdoor pavilion space along with men’s and women’s bathrooms and a baby changing station in each bathroom.

Remembering Lakken
Touching many lives in her brief time on earth, Lakken Burzynski passed away Thursdy, May 23 at the age of 21.
The namesake for Team Lakken, Burzynski defeated childhood cancer in the form of medulloblastoma when she was just 10 years old, receiving treatment for 13 months and adopting the motto “Never let anything dull your sparkle.”
She was diagnosed with glioma last year during a checkup last year.
Memorial Day gathering at Soo Line Park includes brick dedication
Meeting at 7 p.m. on Monday, May 27 at Soo Line Park after cemetery events earlier in the day, the Stanley American Legion Post 112, Stanley VFW Post 2711, and, members of the public gathered to commemorate Memorial Day and dedicate new memorial bricks at the memorial.
Water Operator Don Goettl retires after three decades of service
After over 30 years of service, Water Operator in Charge Don Goettl will retire on May 31.
Graduating from Stanley-Boyd High School in 1980, Goettl immediately entered the workforce before starting his career with the City of Stanley in February 1994 when he was hired as the assistant water and sewer operator at the water department.

Ron Haas named parade grand marshal
Not many people in Stanley don’t know Ron Haas.
He has been described as hardworking, kind, generous, trustworthy, friendly, and a loving family man. Haas has been named parade grand marshal for the parade during Stanley Rodeo Days this Father’s Day Weekend.
Truck and Tractor Pull Debuts Friday
Coming to Chapman Park Friday, June 7, the Stanley Truck and Tractor Pull is a day earlier than in previous years.
Started back in 2005 as a part of the Stanley Rodeo before securing its own weekend, the pull affiliated with the National Tractor Pullers Association will be able to see more competitors on the track since it won’t be competing with the Ellsworth Pull on Saturday.
Winger Construction hosts ribbon cutting in East Business Park
Joe Winger of Winger Construction cut the ribbon on the company’s new building in Stanley’s East Business Park as family, employees, and Chamber members looked on. The building with showroom located at 1418 Pine Street will be the Winger Construction headquarters.

Paper marks anniversary of founding
A relatively long time ago--two full lifetimes or so--a paper called “The Stanley Republican” was started in a then 15-year-old municipality called Stanley, Wisconsin, dating to 1881 on the plat map.
Later buying out the local Stanley Journal (founded 1894) from Richard T. Yundt, the new paper started by W. H. Bridgman became the Stanley Republican and Journal until spring 1899, when “and Journal” was dropped from the title.
Stanley PRCA Rodeo kicks off June 13
Coming to Stanley Father’s Day Weekend, the 20th annual PRCA Rodeo put on by STPR Inc. in connection with the PRCA Rodeo kicks off Thursday June 13 with the Miss Stanley Queen pageant and grand marshal presentation at the Stanley Theater. Doors open at 6 p.m and the pageant starts at 6:30 p.m.
Stanley man running for State Assembly District 69 seat
A longtime Stanley resident and former city council member is seeking election to the State Assembly in District 69.
Roger Halls, 45, moved to Stanley in 2004 upon getting out of the army.

5,500 turn out for 20th anniversary Stanley Rodeo on Father’s Day Weekend
Two decades back, it started with a dream.
Now celebrating 20 years as of this Father’s Day Weekend, the Stanley Rodeo is a dream no more.
“Very well,’ Rodeo Committee spokesman Kevin Hendrickson said of how things went this past weekend. “We had roughly 5,500.”

School moves to purchase 10 new buses
New buses will be on their way to Stanley-Boyd soon, pending some details
Meeting on Monday June 24 at its regular board meeting, the Stanley-Boyd Area School Board moved to approve the purchase of eight new buses, as well as amend a motion from last June with regard to two buses not on schedule, replacing them with comparable ones and moving their purchase to the fiscal year begun July 1. The district received $800,000 in high cost transportation aid at the end of the last fiscal year to help with bus purchase.

GOP Primary for 68th District to take place August 13
Come August 13, voters in States Assembly District 68 will have a choice of two candidates to send on to the November ballot and potentially Madison for the GOP. Contending for a chance on the November ballot are Rob Summerfield of Bloomer and Cliff Taylor of Ladysmith.
An open primary state, Wisconsin does not require that one register with a particular party in order to vote.

Randy LaGrander, age 70, passed away suddenly on Friday, July 12, after a lifetime of hard work and dedication to the Stanley-Boyd area.
Born April 22, 1954 at Marshfield to Dannie and Lorraine LaGrander, Class of 1972.
“He grew up in Stanley and lived here his whole life,” cheesemaker and son Ryan LaGrander shared of Randy’s legacy and dedication to the area.

Area loses founding mother of Stanley Movie Theater
Cecilia Eslinger, 83, passed away surrounded by her loving family. Known in the area for having operated the Stanley Theater with late husband Daniel “Mussy” Eslinger, Cecelia was honored in a tribute by the Stanley Theater, now part of a legacy carried on by her children.
“Today we said goodbye to our founding mother Cecelia Eslinger, the Stanley Theater shared in a statement. “She had moxie, leadership, and courage. She has forever changed the landscape of Stanley.”

Advanced Placement test scores are in at Stanley-Boyd. Requiring a 3 or higher to pass, AP tests allow students to earn college credit while still in high school, thereby saving money on classes.
50th annual Lions Watermelon Fest a success!
The 50th annual Stanley Lions Watermelon Fest went off without a hitch Sunday, event attendees treated to food, fun, and camaraderie.
With changes and additions over the years, early Sunday saw the 12th annual Watermelon Fest 5K, with nearly 70 runners and walkers completing the 3.1 mile event. Lucas Anderson of Bloomer won the male division title, while April Reinart of Greenwood was crowned the ladies champion.

Lieutenant Jacob Carroll of the Stanley Fire Department addressed the Stanley City Council at the council meeting g on August 19 to petition for the appointment of Captain Nathan Samplawski of the Stanley Fire Department as Fire Chief.
Carroll stated, “Since the termination of Chief Korey Hagenson, Captain Nathan Samplawski has shown drastic measures of leadership, discipline, character, and the motivation to move forward the department.”

Results are in for the August 13 partisan primary, setting the stage for fall.
With 100 or approximately 30 percent of Boyd voters weighing in Tuesday August 13, turnout was “close to normal,” according to Village Clerk Sandi Isaacs. At Stanley, some 295 voters took the opportunity to cast ballots, approximating 26.3 percent of registered voters.

Stanley-Boyd School faculty and staff dedicated a purple bench at Oriole Park in honor of Lakken Burzynski on August 28. High School science teacher Mary McIntire, who organized the dedication, shared that she wanted to do something meaningful for Lakken and her family who have influenced the Stanley-Boyd community in so many ways.

Chapman Park camping reservation rates controversy sparks council review
At the Sept. 3 meeting, the Stanley City Council began discussions to hire Konect for shared website hosting to create a Parks website for online registrations for the Chapman Park Campground and City pavilions for 2025
The initial cost would be $12,000 with an annual hosting fee cost of $1,500. City Administrator Nicole Pilgrim explained that the setup cost includes a one time fee which is a large portion of the price plus any add-ons chosen by the Council that range from $350 to $3,000. Alderperson Mark Fitzsimmons mentioned that he received feedback on campground reservation rates, specifically the extended stay rate and asked the Council if they wished to reconsider those rates and policies before approving the website hosting company. Specifically mentioning the “prime site” next to the water, he questioned if the City wanted to established certain camp sites as extended stay sites for people who come to the city to work at local businesses for an extended period of time.

Local resident honor 9/11 Firefighters with 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb at Lambeau Field
The 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb hosted by Pierce Manufacturing, Inc. is an annual event held at Lambeau Field in Green Bay to honor the lives of the firefighters lost on September 11, 2001. Climbing at the event this year were Toni Seidl, Josh Seidl, Carter Vait, Tate Derks, Ava Prahl , and Raegan Christianson.
Held more locally at Oriole Park, members of the Stanley Fire Department gathered to commemorate the heroes of 9/11 as well, going up and down the stairs to memorialize those who climbed the World Trade Center on 9/11.

City Council approves new rates for Stanley Community Center amid budget concerns
The Stanley City Council voted to approve the new rate for rental of the Stanley Community Center to go into effect in 2026. The rates will be $500 for half of the building and $1,000 for the entire facility. The new Depot Pavilion, still under construction, will be available to rent at $50 per side, while the rates for the other pavilions and buildings in town will remain unchanged for 2025.
Rural Thorp man struck and killed while riding bicycle

The death of 65-year-old Andrew J. Niedzwiecki of rural Thorp is being investigated by the Clark County Sheriff’s Department after he was struck and killed while riding his bicycle near his home Tuesday, Sept. 17.

School Board approves CESA 10 contract for Phase 3 Construction Management Services
A new district office is in the works for Stanley-Boyd.
Gathered Monday, Sept. 28, the Stanley-Boyd Area School Board approved a contract with CESA 10 for construction management services for Phase 3 construction and remodel. The proposed relocation of the district office would move it near the pool by the south entrance, said proposal including the addition of a secure entrance and remodel of the existing district office into classroom and office space.

Longtime funeral director remembered Saturday
Stanley lost another legend recently. Keith “Butch” Plombon, age 78, died Saturday, Sept. 21, in the care of Hope Hospice and with his wife Debbie at his side.
The visitation for Butch took place Saturday, Sept. 28 from 10 a.m. to 1:45 p.m., followed by a funeral mass at Holy Family Catholic Church in Stanley at 2:00 p.m.
Royal Credit Union Foundation donates $110,000 to D.R. Moon Memorial Library’s Building Project
On Thursday, Sept. 26, John Sackett, President of the Royal Credit Union Foundation along with Doug Olson and Melanie Baumgart, presented the D.R. Moon Memorial Library with a $110,000 donation for the Library’s Connection Building Project. The generous donation will be designated specifically for the Children’s Area of the Library.

Ron Patten hired as Stanley Fire Chief Until 2027
The Stanley City Council approved the hiring of Boyd Fire Chief Ron Patten as Stanley Fire Chief and Medical Services Director through January 1, 2027 at the Oct. 7 council meeting. Alderperson Laurie Foster questioned why Paten was being appointed.
“I through they already had a fire chief already recommended,” said Foster, referencing members of the Stanley Fire Department’s nomination of Captain Nate Samplawski.
Evers announces $4.137 million grant to D.R. Moon Memorial Library
The D.R. Moon Memorial Library’s lan to expand and renovate received a giant boost Oct. 7 when the library was included by Governor Evers in $115 million worth of grants, made possible via the Department of Administration’s (DOA) Flexible Families Program and funded through the U.S. Department of the Treasury Capital Projects Fund as part of the American Rescue Plan passed under President Biden.
Martino’s to host Pizza and Fire Prevention Fundraiser Oct. 12
It’s back! Taking place once a year, the Martino’s Pizza and Fire Prevention Fundraiser will take place Saturday, Oct. 12 from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. with firefighters in the kitchen, all proceeds from the fundraiser at 965 Pine Street will go to local fire department needs in Stanley and Boyd.

During the City Council’s meeting on October 7th, the rates for Chapman Park Campground were a focal point of discussion. Concerns from the community regarding the high daily rates and the restriction on long-term stays led to a lack of consensus among council members on how to proceed.

Frozen Jr. brings out community
Largest turnout ever to Stanley-Boyd Drama as 1,000 see musical play
Let it go. That was the takeaway from last week’s production of Frozen Jr. at Stanley-Boyd High School. With performances Wednesday, Oct. 16, Saturday, Oct. 19, and Sunday Oct. 20, the Disney hit turned screenplay largely followed the movie, young audience members even showing up in Anna and Elsa costumes as the musical played in two main parts, separated by the intermission.

Firefighter concerns spark at council meeting
New water department staffing approved amid operational concerns
The Stanley Council approved new staffing for the Water Department, with Alderpersons Jacob Huff, Mark Fitzsimmons, Ben Wald, Josh Seidl, and Aaron Dickson voting in favor, while Alderperson Laurie Foster voted against the motion during the Oct. 21 evening meeting. Public Works Operator in Charge John Hoel has been assigned full time to the Water Department at the Northwest Plant, alongside City employee Jeriame Czubakowski.
Bailey Sikora recognized for career milestone
A Stanley-Boyd volleyball player has a new record. Junior Setter and Right Side Hitter Bailey Sikora has passed the milestone for 1,000 assists. Achieved against Owen-Withee in this year’s crossover game, recognition of the achievement came at Cadott Tuesday, Oct. 22 as the Orioles moved into their first postseason game.

School Board approves 2024-25 school tax levy at $6.137 per thousand
Stanley-Boyd was a new mill rate for the school levy.
Passed at the regular October school board meeting with one member of the public in attendance, that mill rate is now $6.137 per $1,000 in assessed property value. The new mill rate represents a fall of 69 cents from last year’s rate or the second lowest since 2005, new rules at the state allowing the district to receive $11,000 per student rather than $10,000

Stanley-Boyd Schools will once again host a Veterans Day program Monday, Nov. 11.
The day will start with a veteran’s lunch in the high school library from 11 a.m .to 12 p.m. All veterans are invited and no RSVP is required.

On November 11, 2024, students from Stanley-Boyd Area School District hosted a heartfelt Veterans Day program honoring the brave men and women who have served in the U.S. military. The program hosted at the Stanley-Boyd High School gymnasium offered an opportunity for all present to reflect on the sacrifices made in service to the country.
Brenner is Cloverbelt defensive player of the year
The Stanley-Boyd Orioles were well represented in the Cloverbelt All Conference Football Team Senior defensive back Cole Brenner was named the Conferences’ defensive player of the year, and Brody Mahr was honored as the conference’s assistant coach of the year.
The Orioles placed nine players on the first team, more than any other team. IN addition to Brenner, first team honors were also earned by:

Martino’s Restaurant presents checks for Stanley, Boyd-Edson Delmar Fire departments
Ron Patten received checks on behalf of the Stanley and Boyd-Edson-Delmar Fire Departments Friday from Martino’s Restaurant. The fundraiser raised a total of $8,370, each department receiving $3,504.89 after food costs were taken out.

Election results show GOP sweep
Election results are in for Nov. 5, showing a GOP sweep nationwide. As for the city of Stanley, a total of 1,115 voters cast their ballots, including 216 absentees and 192 who registered on Election Day. Over at Boyd, a total of 325 voters cast their ballot, out of a total 366 votes in the village as a whole.

Area business seeks permanent home in Boyd
Still awaiting further board action, a possible new business for Boyd made itself known at the regular November village board meeting as Sierra Thell and Mary Sullivan (Sierra’s grandma) presented on Painted Creek Containers, to be potentially located at 214 North Clark Street.
“What we’d like to do is start a business,” Sullivan said. “We’d like to start it in Boyd.”
Stanley Council approves rezoning for new multifamily housing development
The city of Stanley held a public hearing on Nov. 18 to discuss a rezoning application submitted by N&P Properties of Boyd. The request sought to rezone property located on Eighth Avenue and Carter Road in Stanley from A-1 Agricultural District to R-4 multiple family district. Paul Close of N&P Properties attended the meeting to present his proposal to the Plan Commission.

The FREE Community Christmas Basket will be held again this year following last year’s design. Baskets will be available on Dec. 26, 2024 at Trinity Vineyard Church east of Stanley on County Highway X at 2:00 p.m.

High school sophomore Cassidy Kodl is making waves both on stage and in the Stanley-Boyd community as a talented dancer at Relevé Dance Studio and Stanley Area Dance Studio.
Recently, Kodl was selected to perform in the prestigious production of Nutcracker! Magic of Christmas at the Pablo Center at the Confluence on December 5th, an incredible honor that showcases her dedication and skill in the world of dance.
Koenig steps down as Orioles head football coach
The end of an Oriole sports career came quietly Monday, as Jeff Koenig stepped down as Orioles football coach.
Koenig, who took over after Coach Jim Brinker stepped down, has spent 21 seasons as head football coach at Stanley-Boyd, including a state championship.

City approves 2024 Mill Rates
City rates determined by county line
The Stanley City Council adopted resolution 2024-08 to set the 2024 mill rate for the City of Stanley-Chippewa County at $13.51 at the Dec. 2 evening meeting. The council also adopted resolution 2024-09 setting the mill rate for the City of Stanley-Clark County at $17.71.
County Highway NN marks the boundary line between Chippewa and Clark Counties.

Stanley Tourism Commission approves purchase of new holiday lights
The Stanley Tourism Commission, made up of Mayor Mike Henke, Alderperson Jacob Huff, former Mayor Al Haas Robert Allen, Parulben Patel, and Dr. Wayne Hove, convened on Dec. 4 at Stanley City Hall with Allen and Patel absent. City Administrator Nicole Pilgrim presented to the Tourism Commission the idea of purchasing additional holiday lights and banners for Broadway Street.
“I drove through town and realized that our lights look…bad,” she admitted.
‘Reclaim the Magic’ event coming to Chapman Park
Reclaim the Magic is coming to Chapman Park Dec. 15.
Taking place at the Community Building at Chapman Park Sunday, Dec. 15 from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m., the event put on by Reclaimed Tavern and community partners will see 275 wrapped presents and 70 movie passes given away, among other perks.

Up at Boyd, new snowflake decorations in red, green, and white were made possible with cooperation between the Boyd Lions, Boyd Legion, Boyd Chamber, and Village of Boyd.
Santa to visit Boyd Legion
Once again Santa will be making a stop in Boyd! Children will be Abel to visit and talk with the jolly old elf and Mrs. Claus on Sunday, Dec. 15 from 2 p.m to 4 p.m. Due to the popularity the event, it’s being moved to the Boyd Legion Hall to provide more space.

The Stanley-Boyd wrestling program has entered a new era, as longtime head coach Greg Burzynski stepped down in February after 16 years at the helm. Burzynski leaves behind a stories legacy—one marked by state champions, conference titles. And a commitment to shaping young athletes both on and off the mat. Taking over the reins is Coach Jake Fitzsimmons, who has coached at Stanley-Boyd for nine years and is ready to continue the tradition of excellence.
Chapman Park Campground shines bright this December
In recent years the lighting of Chapman Park Campground has become a much-anticipated community tradition. The stunning display of Christmas light is the result of preparation, teamwork, and dedication led by NHS advisor Kimberly Halterman and students from the National Honor Society (NHS) whose hard work transformed the park into a holiday wonderland. Behind the sparkle and glow, there were challenges, moments of inspiration, and incredible acts of generosity that made this project truly special.
Spirit of Christmas arrives in Stanley
On Saturday, Dec. 13, members of the Stanley Lions Club made a trip to Chippewa Falls to pick up Spirit of Christmas gifts for distribution to families of Stanley and Boyd. Carl Edwardson, Larry Ciokiewicz and Tim Troyer drove to Chippewa Falls to pick up the gifts.

School approves contract for LHB design services on district office
The Stanley-Boyd Area Schools Board of Education met in a pre-Christmas regular meeting Monday, Dec. 16, conducting much business.
Among business covered was a contract for LHB services related to a proposed district office relocation, new Ford Explorer from Courtesy Ford, and the designation of Health Styles LLC to conduct pre-employment tuberculosis screening for the district.
Snowstorm Dec. 19 cancels school, results in accident between Stanley and Boyd
They said it would snow—and it did. Just not quite as much as predicted.
Cancelling school and the Library Christmas Party after predictions of several inches, the underperforming snowstorm of Dec. 19 was initially forecast at several inches, a prediction that played out at LaCrosse and Rochester, Minnesota, but not locally.
Blowing in from the west Thursday, the storm saw around two inches of snow in the Stanley-Boyd area, as temperatures locally ranged from a low of 13 degrees Fahrenheit to a high of 22 degrees Fahrenheit.
Meeting on EMS set for Jan. 8
Staffing for local ambulance services is approaching a crisis level.
A meeting about the status of Emergency Medical Services throughout Chippewa County will be held Wednesday, Jan. 8. The meeting is set for 6 p.m. at the Cadott High School Auditorium.
