On September 5, A& D Docks in Cornell held a grand opening with a ribbon cutting by owner Dustin Winich. The business installs and services dock/lifts and in the winter the owner provides snow removal. +++ Branches of Superior Choice Credit Union in Holcombe and Sheldon will be closed as of Wednesday, September 30. With its business model there is a need for lending activity in order to be profitable. Both branches have sufficient deposits but lack lending. Affected employees could be moved to branches in Bruce or Gilman, if there are positions available. +++ If you didn’t know there was a Frisbee Golf Course near the Cadott Elementary School, you should now, after the Cadott Lions Club installed signage to the course. The new sign, near Highway 27, directs interested people to the Lions Pavilion, Disc Golf Course and the Cadott Business District. +++ Effective with the city’s November 1 billing, sewer rates in Cornell will increase to help pay for wastewater treatment plant updates. Revenue generated will cover operating and maintenance expenses, replacement requirements and debt service payments.

The Thorp Courier

On September 3, Yellowstone Computing celebrated their grand opening with a ribbon cutting in downtown Thorp. Previously, the owner Joe Smoczyk operated out of his home. +++ A new event is taking the place of Pumpkin Fest in Thorp. The Great Pumpkin Event will run from Thursday, October 1, through Saturday, October 3. The local businesses involved will offer sales, contests, treats, and more. +++ It’s been a rough year for canceled events due to COVID-19. However, the Thorp FFA corn maze is now open at Dutch Dairy on Gorman Avenue. The maze is open every day, 9 am until dusk.

Bloomer Advance

On Thursday, August 27, an unusual sight occurred around Bloomer. Dairyland Aviation, used its Air Tractor to plant over 1,000 acres in a single day. The bright yellow airplane planted mostly rye cereal on standing corn and bean fields. After the first rainfall, the seed will germinate and begin to grow and by harvest time there should be an established cover crop on the fields. Cover cropping benefits agriculture and the environment by improving the soil biology and properties, increasing water retention, reducing runoff and soil erosion, reducing soil compaction, storing nitrogen in the soil and improving water quality of lakes, streams, and rivers near agricultural land.

O-W Enterprise The Owen-Withee Police Commission held a closed session to evaluate Police Chief Jesus Ibarra and emerged announcing that he is doing an excellent job of working with everyone and will be receiving a $1.00 an hour raise effective January 1. +++ The Owen Downtown Revitalization Committee is making plans for Autumnfest, which is being moved to Halloween and will be held at Mill Pond Park, weather permitting. The event will include a Chili Cook-Off and a pie eating contest. There may also be a costume judging contest. A sub-committee will work on the final format.

Dorchester village board has voted to provide their own police protection and will begin the hiring process. The board had also considered going with the Colby-Abby Police Department or contracting with the Clark County Sheriff’s Department. +++ There are ten new teachers in both the Abbotsford and Colby School Districts. +++ In an event not sponsored by the Colby School District, students celebrated junior prom. Parents and local businesses donated the funds for the prom that was held at Memorial Hall in Dorchester. +++ A U. S. Census worker has raised a concern about the conditions of some rental properties in the village of Dorchester. Some housing units do not have proper addresses displayed, or apartments numbered.

The Owen City Council Personnel Committee held a closed session evaluation of new Public Works Director Chad Smith. In open session, the DPW Director was described as doing an excellent job. +++ An O-W school referendum, in the amount of $1.5 million, will take place on November 3. The funds will enable the acceptance of a FEMA Grant for building a dome, that is suited to withstand an F-5 tornado. The dome will become a community shelter in the time of need, and also enable the school district to meet some current unmet needs. Of note in the report is that Forward Bank has committed $50,000 to the project, if that amount can be matched by businesses and other donors.

Tri-County News The City of Osseo has been awarded a 2020 Community Block Grant for one million dollars. With the grant they will be able to replace water and sewer mains, as well as a complete reconstruction on a four-block area. +++ The Eau Claire Historic Preservation Society presented the Fall Creek Historical Society with a $1,000 check, to assist with the Society's accessioning project. +++ Check out the newly painted water tower when your in the Fall Creek area. It’s different than what you'll see in most communities.

Buffalo County News

Recently, the second annual Buffalo County, Hope 4 U Walk was held in Mondovi. The walk is a remembrance of those lost to suicide, in honor of suicide survivors, and in support of those who are struggling. Five new teachers were welcomed to the Mondovi Schools. +++ Sunday, September 6, a large crowd of onlookers were present for the Annual Labor Day Horse Pull, held at the Loomis “Lazy L” Arena, just east of Mondovi. +++ The Fountain City Historic Preservation Commission recently read village minutes from the time period 1870-1880. The task was completed despite dealing with extremely fancy cursive writing, use of German words, capitalization of words, spelling errors and sentences that were full paragraphs. One of the more humorous findings was the village’s ordaining that henceforth all persons residing in the village shall restrain their hogs from running at large.

The Black River Falls Rotary Club came together with local businesses and individuals to put together a significant “care package” to deliver to areas in Iowa recently hit by a storm that left significant damage. The delivery included water, food, diapers, engine oil and a match $500 worth of goods.

Trempealeau County Times

The City of Arcadia has purchased the former Prevea Health Center for $1.5 million and expects to spend $200,000 remodeling it into a city hall. +++ The former Shopko building in Arcadia has been purchased to expand Ashley Furniture's Outlet Store. The store will be open Friday, Saturday and Sunday and feature discontinued, model and sample products as well as entry level items at 30 to 70 percent off retail prices.
