The Thorp Alumni Association (TAA) held their annual meeting on June 25, with 13 alumni present. President Paula Teclaw Paskert reported that all seven applicants who applied for TAA Scholarships each received $2,000. A lively and lengthy discussion regarding the future of TAA was held. A vote on whether to disband was defeated. A second motion accepted the slate of ovcers for one year and it was passed with the stipulation that it would be re-evaluated at the June 24, 2023 Annual Meeting. +++ The two-day blood drive in Thorp, held on July 21 and 22, collected 83 units, just seven short of the goal of 90. There were two first time donors, Martin Zeiest and Jeremy Mahr. As a donor, Billy Buss reached an amazing 18 gallons. +++ The Reseburg Ramblers 4-H Club honored former member Seth Webb with a barn quilt that was painted by Stephanie Clabots. The barn quilt will be hung in the new Livestock Building at the Clark County Fair each year for all to see. +++ Members of the Thorp FFA attended the 93rd State FFA Convention in Madison, June 13-16. Voting delegates Becca Abramczak and Luke Schraufnagel voted on state issues and selecting Devani Hinkleman of Loyal as the next Section 7 State Ovcer.

The Cornell Area Fire Department has a new fire chief. His name is Matt Boulding and he has been with the fire department for 19 years. His appointment fulfills his lifelong dream of being a fire chief. His father served with the department for 34 years. Matt’s years of experience has included serving as a safety officer, lieutenant, and assistant fire chief. +++ Cornell Middle/ High School Principal Dave Elliott has submitted his resignation euective at the end of the 2022-23 school year. Elliott has been in the education field since 1985, in three states, six districts and the last 20 years at Cornell. +++ More broadband expansion is coming to Chippewa County. Spectrum Mid-America received $812,650 (a $1.3 million dollar match is required) to serve eight businesses and 119 residential locations in Cadott, and the townships of Anson and Lafayette, all in Chippewa County. +++ The free Come Now & Eat Community Table at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Cadott will again welcome in-house dining starting with the July 27 meal. Serving will be from 4:30-6 pm.

Bloomer Advance

The Bloomer City Council voted to donate the Veterans Memorial site and an outlot to the American Legion, VFW, and Amvets, contingent on them accepting it. The outlot had been sought by the veterans with the intention of building a new clubhouse. If they accept the council’s ouer, they no longer have to seek permission to update the memorials and would be required to provide all maintenance. +++ If you live in Bloomer you better be on the lookout for catalytic converter thieves. On Friday, June 24, Bruce Miller had his Ford van parked on Duncan Road when a neighbor called and asked him if he was having trouble because his vehicle was spotted with blocks under his van. He checked and discovered the catalytic converter was gone. Miller had heard of such thefts back in January and reported the theft to the Bloomer Police. +++ Six Bloomer Boy Scouts volunteered at the Chippewa Valley Air Show, which hosted the Blue Angels on June 4-5. The event is a council wide fundraiser. The scouts worked very hard with flight line, set-up, crowd fence maintaining and tear down.

O-W Enterprise

The Soup and Sandwich Supper, held at St. Katherine’s Episcopal Church in Owen resumed June 23, for the first time in over two years due to COVID restrictions. Frank and Louise Oolszewski received a 60th wedding anniversary surprise at the event. +++ Allan Hodnett, the president of the newly formed Owen- Withee Area Historical Society has made an appeal for folks to join the organization, after laying out a host of reasons one should want to be a member. +++ On June 24, four new members were installed in the Owen-Withee Lions Club. +++ The Owen- Withee Summer School ended with a program entitled, “The Magic of Isaiah.” Isaiah Foster provided magical entertainment for his Summer School audience.

The Colby School Board has approved multiple summer projects to upgrade district properties. Items approved include updating exterior doors, high school roof repairs, HVAC system upgrades, new concrete in the softball and baseball dugouts and goalpost for the high school football field. +++ The Colby Dairy Breakfast was attended by 1,664 people. +++ Over 200 students in the Colby School District are identified as English Language Learners. The School Board has approved a third EL position and will now have one such teacher in the elementary, middle and high school.

The Sentinel & Rural News

The Withee High School Reunion returned after a three-year hiatus. The reunion was held at I.G.Y.S Bar in Withee on June 18. There were 46 schoolmates and guests in attendance. Since the last reunion held in 2019, which was attended by 77, 41 members have passed away. The program was Louise Olszewski providing a history and notable events during the last 100 years of the Withee Library. It was decided to meet again in two years during Withee Days and Father’s Day weekend.

The Annual Loyal Chamber Movie Night was held on June 24. Activities included a bouncy house, lawn mower rides, food and a firetruck sprinkler session. Patrons enjoyed popcorn and a movie at dusk. The event took place at the old fire station.+++ The Greenwood School Board approved a bid of $31,950 from Maurer Roofing in Marshfield. to replace the elementary gym roof +++ The Neillsville School Board has approved new reading programs for grades Kindergarten through Sixth Grade. The K-2 program is “Super-Kids,” and the Third-Sixth Grade program is known as “ Wonders.” And the price tag was $116,000. +++ The Greenwood Dairy Breakfast drew 1,763 guests.

Tri -County Area Times

On June 14, ground was broken for the Osseo Veterans Memorial to be located next to the American Legion Cabin in the pines in Stoddard Park. The hot day was spent excavating and preparing the site in anticipation of the pavilion floor being poured. +++ Crowds gathered for the first Osseo Farmer’s Market and Garber Bandshell Concert Series of the season on Monday, June 27 in Central Park.
