The Chippewa County Board unanimously approved an ordinance change on March 12 allowing ATV/UTV traffic on low and medium volume county highways with less than 750 vehicles per day. This does not include county highways in cities and villages as those are dependent on local government approval. At the May 6 meeting, the Stanley City Council, with the exception of Alderperson Mark Fitzsimmons, gave its approval to update ATV use on city streets, excluding Chapman Park which remains off limits. Referring to the high volume of truck traffic and three gravel pits in the area of County Highway O, Fitzsimmons expressed his apprehension.
“O makes me nervous because of the amount of truck traffic that’s on that.” He commented on the heavy truck traffic that is generally concentrated right from the park coming into town. “That was my only apprehension. I mean, I’d hate to see someone smoked over by a dump truck or a milk truck. It’s a high traffic road.”
“Use at your own risk,” said Huff.
The updated ordinance is expected to be approved later this month.
