A barn fire west of Boyd Saturday has resulted in the loss of a barn, along with 50 pigs.
The barn at 7566 300th Street is registered to Nicholas and Deanna Schmitt and stored two tractors one John Deere 720 and the other a Farmall H, as well as some hay and two hay kicker machines, all lost in the fire. Boyd-Edson-Delmar Fire Chief Ron Patten said the fire was called in after smoke was noticed while feeding pigs in the barn, having finished lawn mowing.
“She was downstairs in the barn basement feeding pigs and noticed smoke,” he said of the initial fire report. “She noticed smoke, went upstairs, and the barn was on fire.” Patten said nearby corn fields had started to burn as well by the time Boyd-Edson-Delmar arrived, the barn itself starting to fall in. Patten said the Boyd ambulance was on scene, but that no one was transported.
Met with a full response from Stanley, Cadott, and Cornell, the barn was nonetheless a total loss.
“Yes it is,” Patten said of the barn loss. The Chippewa County Sheriff’s Department assisted as well.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
