The Stanley Bike Trail has taken a new turn, following a meeting Thursday, May 1 at City Hall.
The revised trail route if approved will run from Stanley-Boyd High School down Fourth Avenue to Emery, at which point it will turn left and head to First Avenue, turning on to city owned land past McKnight Street before continuing down West Fourth Avenue to Chapman.
The trail as proposed would connect Chapman Park to the school and build on a preexisting trail behind the school.
Bike lanes with ‘no parking’ signs would be installed along Fourth Avenue to Emery, as well as West First Avenue between Broadway and McKnight and the south side of Chapman Lake. Franklin to the library would be shared lanes, as would that portion from the library to First Avenue.
Measures to ensure safe crossing would be installed at Franklin and Fourth Avenue.
The route as proposed depends on a state grant, with application due May 25. The grant application requires that the trail route be known for all that land disposed of by the city, minor adjustments possible after application but not the route itself.
“We had to eliminate First Avenue because that wasn’t going to work and do Fourth Avenue as much as possible,” Mark Fitzsimmons said of the route change.
As for the area of First Avenue at Emery, “the trail would go behind the pavilion or along the pavilion and swing up on the north side of the veterans memorial,” Fitzsimmons said, connecting with First Avenue out to Chapman Park.
A public hearing on the proposed bike path will be held Friday, May 23 at 6:00 p.m. at Stanley City Hall, located at 353 South Broadway Street.
