Boyd men awarded Lions Club award

Gary Dorn and Jeff Zais of Boyd have been awarded a Birch-Sturm Fellowship, in recognition of their commitment to serving the people in their community and beyond.
The Fellowship is named in honor of the only two Presidents of Lions Clubs International from Wisconsin, Frank Birch and Clarence Sturm. This Fellowship honors those who exemplify undying dedication and commitment to humanitarian works.
Gary and Jeff are members of the Boyd Lions Club. The awards and pins were presented on Tuesday evening, November 5 at the Lions Club meeting held at the Village Haus in Boyd. Past District Governor Jerry Zais, uncle to Jeff Zais, presented the award to Jeff, while Past District Governor Delores Ruff LaFaive, Gary’s 1st cousin, presented the award to Gary.
As a Birch-Sturm Fellow, Gary and Jeff become a part of a growing network of individuals who are committed to improving the quality of life for those in Wisconsin and around the world. Past winners from the Boyd Lions Club include Bud Licht in 2006, Boney McQuillan (in memory of) in 2007, Bob Scholze (in memory of) in 2009, Sylvester Seichter in 2010, and Denny McQuillan in 2014.
Jeff has been in the Lions Club for over 41 years and has held the office of President twice, Zone Chairman and carries the current title of Director. He states that it is so great to be part of an organization that does so much good around the world.
Years ago, Gary’s father asked him to join the Lions, and after researching the Club and learning how they help both people and communities, he decided this was the kind of club he wanted to be a part of. He appreciated their motto “We Serve” and has now been a part of the Lions for 44 years. He has held the office of President and is also currently serving as a Director.
Local events the Lions Club sponsors include the Bowling Tournament in the Spring, Charcoal Chicken during Ringlespiel, Halloween Trick or Treating in Boyd, and delivering Christmas baskets for elderly residents in our area in early December. In prior years, the Lions held an annual softball tournament at Lotz Park in Boyd. If you are interested in joining the Lions Club, please contact a current member for information.
The ways in which the Lions Clubs serve include Childhood Cancer where they support the needs of children and families affected by childhood cancer, support for those living with Diabetes, and Disaster Relief by supplying immediate and long-term support by those affected by natural disasters. They also find ways to protect the environment, help prevent hunger and provide humanitarian assistance. The Lions Clubs help prevent blindness and improve life for the blind and visually impaired (please donate those old eyeglasses!). They are also there for our youth to help them make positive choices and have healthy and productive lives. There are over 49,000 clubs with 1.4 million members in over 200 countries.
As stated on the Lions Club International website
We are serving a world in need, one act of kindness at a time.
