Need a place to take your sharps?
Boyd Wisconsin will soon have a centralized disposal location for medical sharps. The Village Board acting at its Monday, March 10 regular board meeting approved a Memorandum Of Understanding (MOU) with the Chippewa County Department of Public Health (CCDPH). Motion to approve was made by Trustee Michael Eslinger and seconded by Village President Bob Geist.
Passing 2-0 with Trustee Sarah McQuillan abstaining due to project involvement through Chippewa County Public Health, the new sharps disposal container will be located outside the village hall at 705 East Murray Street, providing a means to dispose of diabetic or other supplies.
“It will be outside,” McQuillan said at March meeting. “It does have a tracker and is monitored with a GPS sensor.” The sensor allows the waste disposal company doing pickup to know when the container is in need of service. Chippewa County Highway Department will be the one to install the container, with more details revealed in the MOU.
Per the agreement, CCDPH will purchase, install, and maintain the sharps disposal container and be responsible for registering it with the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources. The CCDPH will then contract with a waste disposal facility properly licensed with the state DNR to transport and dispose of used sharps, in line with Wisconsin Administrative Code 526.10. The Village will permit Chippewa County maintenance staff to secure the unit to a concrete or other hard surface and notify CCDPH if the unit appears “damaged, full, overflowing, or not working properly as soon as practical.” The Village will also notify staff if there is noted concern of unapproved of inappropriate items deposited in the container, and provide 60 days or more of notice if removal is requested. Both parties agree to hold the other harmless of “suits, actions, legal or administrative proceedings, claims, demands, damages, and liabilities arising out of any acts, omissions, faults, or negligence” by either party or authorized MOU representatives.
Coming soon to Murray Street, the new sharps disposal unit will provide a safe means to dispose of medical sharps.
