It took some personal schedule alignment, but the Boyd Village Board found a compromise a date to hold its budget workshop. The date?

October 26 at 5:30 p.m., prior to fire board. The budget workshop will also be taking place before the referendum and as such will include two sets of numbers for the coming year, one if the referendum to raise the levy limit passes and another if it doesn’t. As to what the voters at Boyd will be asked to decide Nov. 8, the question on the ballot will be stated as follows: Under state law, the increase in the levy of the Village of Boyd for the tax to be imposed for the next fiscal year, 2023, is limited to 1.644%, which results in a levy of $156,335. Shall the Village of Boyd be allowed to exceed this limit and in- crease the levy for the next fiscal year, 2023, for the purpose of critical street maintenance projects, maintaining public safety services, update maintenance equipment, maintaining public safety services, update maintenance equipment and fire department equipment, by a total of 63.965%, which results in a levy of $256,335, and on an ongoing basis, include the increase of $100,000 for each fiscal year going forward?

With current shared revenue in double digits and village infrastructure needs in the triple digits, the referendum Nov. 8 will determine which set gets published and presented to the county for the coming year, a time crunch to meet outside expectations being responsible for the two sets of numbers. By preparing two sets in advance of the vote and based on whether it passes or else doesn’t, the corresponding budget numbers will be ready for publishing as soon as the verdict is known the levy limit referendum.

Following newspaper publication, a public hearing on the proposed 2023 Boyd budget will be held Dec. 6th at 7 p.m. at the village hall, concurrent with the regular board meeting, moved up a week to meet county needs.

“The county wants their numbers by Dec. 9,” Isaacs said of the budget at the Oct. meeting. The county needs the budgets from Boyd and other municipalities, in order to plan its own.
