On May 29th, the D.R. Moon Memorial Library hosted “Shaping Destiny-Overcoming ACES by Building Youth Resilience,” a free event available to community members. Presented by the Chippewa Health Improvement Partnership and led by JoAnna Bernklau, Planning and Promotion Specialist, and Rachel Potaczek, a Public Health Nurse at the Chippewa County Department of Public Health, the enlightening event focused on Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACES) and the impact they can have on an individual’s life. The event aimed to cultivate resilience and raise awareness in the community and empower its members to create a safer and more supportive environment for all.
“Learning this information will help all of us support the children in our communities,” said Potaczek as the evening began.
Attendees learned about the effects of ACEs while gaining insights into the complexities of trauma and the power of resilience and learning strategies for building resilience. A video was shared that explained the complexities of ACEs and how personal experiences can shape the outcome of lives. Three types of ACEs include abuse, neglect, and household dysfunction. As an individual’s number of ACEs increases, so does their risk for negative health outcomes. Resiliency, the ability to bounce back from adversity, is influenced by an individual’s environment and the more positive support a person receives, the more hopeful their future. Early relationships are vitally important as early experiences shape brain development. It takes the whole community to help youth build resiliency. Self-care is also an important factor as it starts with cultivating resiliency within yourself.
