If you happened to have been downtown on Tuesday, January 24, you may have seen the Chapman Park bridge being transported back to the park. After missing from the park for about five months, it is now resting near the deer park entrance, waiting to be lifted back into place where it will again connect the mainland to the island. The shadows from the bridge are often reflective in the water and thus provide a picture taking opportunity. It is also a favorite spot for wedding pictures. Thank you to the Rod Milas family for their having the bridge rejuvenated as a memorial to Wyatt Milas, who was killed in a car accident on October 21, 2020. *** I have received word that Mary (Gisvold) Wellsandt, Stanley- Boyd Class of 1961, passed on Tuesday, January 7, at her home in Abbotsford. Mary’s mother Marcelline and my mother were friends and played in the same bridge club. In childhood when Mary was causing issues on the home front she sometimes was sent to our home on Oak Street where she needed to be entertained until it was time for her to return home. On one occasion I remember telling my mother Mary could come but we were going to the Wolf River to fish and if she got bloodsuckers on her feet she was going to have to remove them herself! I don’t remember the outcome but Mary came along fishing. Over the years, I heard from Mary periodically, when she would call for some historical information, or to confirm something related to the history of Stanley, she was thinking about. *** Looking for something different for you or the family to do? If so, consider the Sunday swim at the Stanley-Boyd Community Pool. Sunday hours are 11 am -12 noon Lap Swimming. 12 – 3 pm General Swim. It’s fun and an inexpensive way for a family outing. Sunday swims take place during the months of January, February and March. Take advantage of the extended Sunday hours and the beautiful facilities we have right here at Stanley-Boyd. And if your an early riser there is an open swim Monday – Friday each morning from 5:30 am to 7 am. *** I was sorry to see that the Sheeley House & Saloon in Chippewa Falls is again on the market. The National Register of Historic Places describes it as a three-story Italianate-style building dating back to the 1860’s. It was built to house a livery stable on the first floor, a living quarters on the second floor and boarding house on the third floor. In the early 1900’s the first floor was made into a saloon. Restorations and updates have modernized it but it still has retained its historic character. The three story building has 5,270 square feet. Over the life of the building, there have been six owners, a surprisingly small number for a building that is about 163 years old. Interested buyers can check for more information from Deb Hanson, a Century Affiliated Realtor. *** I have also recently learned that another Chippewa Falls area Supper Club has closed. Connell’s Supper Club was sold not to long ago and apparently the new owners have not made it go. New cooks and bar tenders often times are major changes to be dealt with. Details, or an official announcement, have not been available, only rumors and those will not be reported here. The loss of the Frog Hop at rural Cadott and now Connell’s closure makes for less choice. We are fortunate to have a number of good eating options locally.
*** Did you know? Walmart has more than 10,000 locations in 24 different countries across the globe. Walmart is the largest private employer globally, with a workforce of 2.2 million employees. * Trader Joe’s is the sister company of Aldi and there is a long history between the two companies. Trader Joe’s is seen as a higher-end Aldi’s Store. There are many locals who have been heard wishing a Trader Joe’s would locate in the Chippewa Valley. *** Have you noticed the increasing number of people who reach the age of 100 these days? We had the pleasure of attending June Stangel’s 100th birthday celebration at the Stanley Community Center on Saturday, January 28. It was great gathering of June’s family, former neighbors and friends who came together to celebrate 100 amazing years of service to her family, community and church. June now lives pretty much independently in her own apartment at the Homeplace here in Stanley. What is amazing is what statistics show related to those who reach the age 100. Approximately 1 in 5,000 people live to celebrate their 100th birthday. There are an estimated 97,914 centenarians living in the U. S. as of the last estimate in 2021. Modern medicine and advances in medical care keeps pushing more of us towards that 100th birthday! If your relatively healthy and reach 100 it’s a blessing. *** Nestle Health Science recently announced a $43 million expansion of its plant in Eau Claire that produces an array of medical nutrition products, such as tube feeding formula, and nutritional drinks such as BOOST and Carnation Breakfast Essentials. The expansion will bring with it 60 new jobs, ranging from processing, packaging and filling line workers to mechanics and engineers. This is exciting as our son and several area acquaintances are employed by Nestle’s in Eau Claire. Nestle’s is a great place to work as it has a very clean environment, pays very competitive wages, and the facility is a zero waste-to-landfill facility. The facility also has a large percentage of factory water usage being recovered. *** Smile time. I just asked a 6 year old if he understands why there is no school today. He said yes because they are out of toilet paper. +++ You think its bad now? In 20 years our country will be run by people home schooled by day drinkers….. +++ A lesson for today… 40 Years of Marriage: A married couple in their 60’s are celebrating their 40th Anniversary in a quiet romantic restaurant. Suddenly, a fairy appeared. She said, For being such an exemplary couple and being loving to each other, I will grant you each a wish. The wife answered “Oh, I want to travel around the world with my darling husband.” Poof and two tickets for the Queen Mary II appeared in her hands. The husband thought a moment, “Well, this is all very romantic but an opportunity like this will never come again. I’m sorry my love, but my wish is to have a wife 30 years younger than me.” The wife and the fairy were deeply disappointed, but a wish is a wish. So the fairy waved her wand and poof! The husband became a 92 year old. The moral of the story: Men who are ungrateful should remember fairies are female. +++ A young boy was staring at a neighbor’s newborn when he announced, “We have a baby just like that at home! He just has a different head.”
