Girl Scout Troop 3475 earns Bronze Award with cat furniture

The girls in Stanley-Boyd Girl Scout Troop 3475 are proud to announce that they have completed their Bronze Award.

This is the highest award a Junior Girl Scout can earn and prepares them for their Silver Award as Cadette Girl Scouts. The minimum hours required for the Bronze Award is 20 and they cut conduit, stained wood, drilled, sewed, assembled and worked together to accomplish this project over the course of several meetings this summer.

On Sunday, September 25th all 10 girls in the troop delivered to the Taylor County Humane Society a cat tower/hammock, a ramp for post-surgical animals, four cat climber towers and four crates to be mounted on the walls to give the cats exercise by jumping and climbing and a cat scratcher. The girls also made tie blankets, dogs toys and one girl (Lilly and her mom Kyra) baked homemade dog treats. With the help of a couple dads in the troop, Rodger Weltzin and Jason Bourget, the girls were able to accomplish the building/ construction portion of the project and they assisted with hanging it at the humane society as well. After the project was complete they were able to play with the cats and dogs that were at the facility.

Special “thank yous” go to Erika (Oma) Gilpin for teaching the girls to sew and assisting with the fabric for the cat tower. Hazugas for having most of the supplies we need- ed and finding them locally, Hetches in Boyd for helping us choose the lumber needed and all the parents who helped the girls sew, measure, cut and work through trial and error with this project, it takes a team. The girls held a bake sale at Fall Fest in Stanley to raise money to pay for the supplies for their project, thank you to ALL who came and supported! Thank you to The Stanley Community Association for holding the event.

Our Junior Girl Scouts participated in a special ceremony on September 25th after they delivered their project, a Bridging Ceremony. After girls complete 2 years as Juniors, they “bridge” to the next level, Cadettes. The ceremony was warmly accommodated by The Stanley Theater and the delicious food was catered in by Debbie’s on Broadway, our town is so blessed to have these businesses and they were amazing to work with. The 70 guests in attendance watched the girls hold a traditional flag ceremony, renew their commitment in scouting and re- flected back on a slideshow of pictures from when the girls were in Kindergarten to present and all they have done. What lies ahead for these girls is working on a new chapter of discovering and challenging themselves, helping their community and making the world a better place.

We are currently fundraising to go to Savannah, GA to tour the home of Juliette Gordon Low, the founder of Girl Scouts. Look for the candy cane fundraiser, cookie sales and other fundraisers of Troop 3475 what these hard working girls do and know your support is helping them strengthen their skills, their community and providing memories of a lifetime.
