Largely open field for spring election as few file candidacy

If you or someone you know has ever thought of public office, now’s your chance.

With less than two weeks to filing deadline for the spring election, the candidates are few, and opportunities many, for public service.

“I have not gotten anything yet,” City Clerk Nicole Pilgrim said of filings as of Monday. With four seats and the mayor’s post potentially open, incumbents and new names alike have until Jan. 2 at 5 p.m. to pick up and return papers. Alderpersons need 20 signatures to make the ballot, and mayoral candidates 50 signatures. Prospective candidates could pick up papers from the Clerk’s Office, Pilgrim said.

Seats up for election this spring include those of Mark Fitzsimmons (First Ward), Josh Seidl (Second Ward), and Mike Henke (Third Ward), and Holly Kitchell (Fourth through Seventh and Ninth Wards), as well as Mayor Al Haas. Informal indications were that Haas has decided not to run this spring.

At Boyd, meanwhile, the spring election has the seats for Casey Dorn and Dale Isaacs on the ballot. Village Clerk Sandi Isaacs said Monday that only Dorn had taken out nomination papers, but had yet to return them.

“Nobody’s filed non-candidacy," she said. The Village Trustee position includes such things as making decisions for the village related to park improvements, equipment changes, and the tax and mill rates. Non-candidacy filing ends on Friday, Dec. 22, while those returning nomination papers have until Jan. 2, at 5 p.m., with three more days (72 hours) given for deadline of first time candidates.

At Stanley-Boyd School District, the ballot posts are filled, though others can file. District Administrative Assistant Renee Mahal said that incumbents Chad Verbeten and Ryan Lewallen had both turned in papers as of Monday.

Attempts to reach the Chippewa County Clerk for candidate filings to county board were unsuccessful before press time.
