Lions and Sportsman’s Club gearing up for major tree planting in city parks

The Stanley Lions held their monthly meeting on Monday, March 13, at Debbie’s on Broadway.

Following secretary and treasurer reports, President, Dave Jankoski reviewed the visitation from the District Governor on February 13. General consensus was that the joint meeting with Boyd was very successful.  Jankoski announced that he and Lion Pat will be attending the Zone Meeting on Friday, March 17 at Jim Falls and that he and Lion Jerry Dirkes will be attending the District 27-E1 Convention on April 1.

Under old business, Lion Jim Jones updated the attendees on the Bike Trail and the Plastic Recycling Projects.  The Bike Trail Project has received a grant to fund a study on a segment of the proposed route.  The Plastic Recycling Project is going well.  It was noted that a donation from Curve Inn and the Stanley Community Endowment Fund will be funding the purchase of two 40 gallon recycling receptacles, which will be placed at the new location of Lube Suppliers, 614 S. Broadway.  The community is invited to place plastic grocery bags, or plastic bags from other stores in the containers.  Only clean plastic and plastic that has some stretch to it is acceptable.

It was noted that the Lions Annual Watermelon Festival will be held on Sunday, July 30.  President Jankoski thanked the committee chairs noting that committees will have the same leadership as last year.

Lion Jim Jones discussed the forthcoming tree planting projects that will be held on April 28 (Arbor Day). If bad weather is in the forecast, tree planting will occur April 26.   The project is a co-endeavor of the Stanley Lions and Stanley Sportsman’s Club.  The goal is to plant 100 trees in the three city parks, with most to be planted in Chapman Park. The trees will replace trees lost to the Emerald Ash Borer and the December 15, 2021 tornado.  The planting will be done by Lions, members of the Sportsman’s Club, city workers, students under the leadership of Mr. Jordan Donnerbauer and community volunteers. Of the trees donated, 50 came from the Lions Club, 25 from the Stanley Sportsman Club and 25 from local businesses and Stanley area residents.

Before adjourning, forthcoming summer fundraisers were reviewed.  Lion Norm Christianson announced that the Country Terrace Lions sponsored Brat Supper will take place on March 20 and on April 17, the Moon Park Apartments Brat Super and Bingo will be held.  Lions were invited to attend the Boy Scouts Court of Honor to be held on April 29, when Issac Peters and Chris Marion will be awarded their Eagle Scout Pins.  It was also announced that at the April Meeting officers for 2023-2024 will be elected. Candidates for President and Vice-President are needed.

It was also noted that the next regular Lions Meeting will be held on April 10, at Debbie’s on Broadway.  Before adjournment, Lion Dave Winkler’s name was drawn for the attendance award.
