The Stanley Lions held their monthly meeting on June 9 at Debbie’s on Broadway, with installation of new officers conducted by Past District Governor, Larry Bradley, from Jim Falls. In addition to installing the new officers, Lion Bradley spoke briefly on the Lions Eye Bank. He reported that in 2024 there were 1,138 donated corneas and 1,500 were released for transplant to residents in the state of Wisconsin, nationwide and even some to International Eye Banks. The new Eye bank facility in Madison invites visitors to see and learn what they do and accomplish, thanks to the Wisconsin Lions Clubs support.
Local guests at the meeting were Jon and Lauren Cody, from Stanley’s Cody’s Classic Cars, who are taking over the handling of the Lions Car Show, at the Watermelon Festival. Also present was special guest Betty Nenzel, spouse of deceased long time member Clifford Nenzel, who will be celebrating her 100th birthday on October 18. Guests were given a rousing round of applause.
Lion Jerry Dirkes provided good news that their recently held Lions Thrift Sale netted $2,040, thanks to the members and friends who contributed items and the support of the community through sales. The earning have been placed in the Lions Administrative Fund. Lion Jim Jones reported that the Lions 2026 trip to Chanhassen to see “Guys and Dolls,” has a full bus and he is now taking names for a waiting list or even a possible second bus.
A review of plans for the forthcoming Watermelon Festival was held. Craig Luzinski , attended on behalf of the Oriole Diamond Club, to discuss having a Baseball Tournament in conjunction with the Watermelon Festival. The tournament would consist of four teams from Bloomer, Neillsville, Stanley and Gilman or Medford. After hearing the proposal his organization was given permission to go ahead. Other reports indicate planning in nearing completion. The only need is for another person willing to work two hours cutting watermelon. Any willing community volunteer is asked to contact Gary Krueger. Lion Dirkes also noted that community members who would like to donate a cake for the Watermelon Cake Walk can deliver it to him at Chapman Park the day of the event.
The Lions next meeting will be held on July 14 at Debbies’s on Broadway.
