Meeting on Monday, January 9, the Stanley Lions held an upbeat and productive meeting related to successfully completed service projects and making plans for planting trees in city parks on Arbor Day. Lion Mary Jo Winkler, reported for Lion Dave Winkler, that so far this year the deer hides collected numbered 624. Express Mart, Inge’s Custom Meat Processing and Zais’s Meat and Locker Plant in Boyd were thanked for their assistance in making the project successful. The hides will be sold and are expected to bring $3,320, with all proceeds going towards the cost of operating the Lions Camp at Rosholt. The camp is free of charge to students with challenges. Those Lions who helped with the project were thanked, as were all the hunters who donated hides. Lion Carl Edwardson reported that this year’s Spirit of Christmas project provided gifts for 130 children, in 66 families, that live in the Stanley/Boyd/Cadott/ Cornell area. The gifts are provided due to the generosity of contributors to the Spirit of Christmas Program. Those who assisted with the transportation and distribution were thanked. This year’s distribution took place at the spacious new Stanley Community Building.
Lion Edwardson announced that the Lions Christmas Raffle was successful with all tickets sold. All drawings took place at Bob Valk’s Barber Shop and the winners have been announced in the local newspaper. Lion Jim Jones reported on the Lions plastic recycling efforts and provided some amazing statistics related to the project. The total weight of the stretch plastic recycled in 2022 was 1,012 lbs. Two benches have been received with recycled plastic being used in their construction. The second bench is currently being used in a Stanley-Boyd Elementary second grade classroom, where students are enjoying it as a “reading bench.” Plastic collection continues as a Lions Project, and in 2023 the goal is to receive two more benches that is the maximum number allowed each year. All participants in the Lions Christmas Party were thanked. It was noted that some very unique gifts were received. Lion Lorena Mc Loone was thanked for her rendition of “The Night Before Christmas.” The group will be looking forward to the return of Lion Dan and Erin Plombon’s contests next December.
Under New Business, President Dave Jankoski, announced that the 27-E1 District Governor, Brian Dulmes will be making his annual visit to a joint meeting of the Boyd and Stanley Lions Clubs, on Monday, February 13. The meeting will be held at Debbies on Broadway with a 5:30 pm social and a 6 pm dinner. A monetary gift was voted to Leader Dog, the District Governor’s designated project. It was voted to contribute $100 to the Stanley-Boyd Senior Lock-In with the funds designated for scholarships. After Acting Treasurer Norm Christianson’s report, it was voted to contribute a total of $1,250 to the Parade of Checks at the District Convention, to be held this year at 29 Pines, on March 24 and 25. Lion Jones provided an update on the Lions goal to planting 100 trees in city parks to replace trees destroyed by ash bore disease. The trees have been ordered, the Lions with work cooperatively with city staff and community volunteers to accomplish the project on Arbor Day, April 28. The Lions will also be announcing the availability of a limited number of trees that will be made available to private property owners, to replace trees destroyed by the tornado. Look for further information in an article in the Stanley Republican.
Lion John Mc Loone’s name was drawn for the attendance award. Unfortunately, he was not present to collect!
