Lions plan for busy end of year and beyond

The September14, Stanley Lions meeting was held at Fandry Park Lions Pavilion. Lion President Jerry Dirkes called the meeting to order after the serving a chicken and brat dinner he had prepared. After routine secretary and treasurer reports, old business included a detailed report on income and expense statements for each of the recently held fundraisers. In summary, the Brat/Pork Chop Sale earned the club $852.45, the Lions Thrift Sale $1,870.80 and the Cheese Curd Sale $1,690. Total income came to $4,413.25. Those who contributed to and supported these Lions fundraisers were again thanked for their support.

In new business, Lion Dave Jankoski presented information on free books that are available on juvenile diabetes, from the Wisconsin Lions Foundation. He suggested that the five being offered be ordered, and that the Boyd Lions be asked to also order five, and then the ten books be distributed one to St. Joseph’s in Boyd, one to the Boyd Elementary Pre-School, one to the Stanley Public Library, and the rest to the Stanley- Boyd Elementary School. The books are written at the Pre-K-3 grade level and beautifully illustrate a story of a kid living with diabetes and helping other kids understand what they are experiencing. There was a discussion on a need for a wheel chair ramp for a Stanley resident. After an extended discussion, it was decided that the Lions would not be taking on any ramp projects.

Looking ahead the Stanley Lions Highway 29 Cleanup, two miles to the east, will be held on Sunday, October 4, at 4:30 pm, with Lions and Boy Scouts providing the service. The Annual Sunset Homes Brat Feed is scheduled to be held on Monday, October 19 at 5 pm. Lion Dave Winkler, along with Lions John Pozdell and Duane Booth, will be handling the Annual Deer Hide Collection in Stanley.

In other business, it was voted to hold the Annual Lions Christmas Raffle with drawings taking place at Bob’s Barber Shop. Lion Dave Winkler is again working on the details for this annual event. Lion Dean Boie suggested that a Stanley Lion should be supported to step up and serve in a District Level position. Any Lion interested should contact King Lion Dirkes. Lion Adam Smit presented an overview of the Lions Scholarship Investments and what investment options are available to consider because the club has a number of bonds that are likely to be called by January 1, 2021. That money will need to be reinvested in order to earn interest, so the offering of five scholarships annually to Stanley-Boyd graduates can continue. President Dirkes pointed out that in April 2021, the Stanley Lions will be celebrating their 75th Anniversary and the club has not celebrated a milestone since the 50th anniversary when a banquet was held. It was voted to plan a celebration, hopefully at the new Chapman Park Community Building. Lions Norm Christianson, Jeff Lyp, Duane Booth, Dave Jankoski, and Jerry Dirkes volunteered to serve on a 75th Anniversary Steering Committee.

It was announced that the next regular meeting of the Stanley Lions Club will be held at Deano’s on Monday, October 12. Lion Larry Ciokiewicz was the winner of the attendance drawing and was not present to collect his good fortune.
