The mission of the Stanley Area Historical Society is to preserve the history of the area through the collection of artifacts and educate the public with displays/exhibits and programs. The local museum has over 10,000 sq. ft. of exhibit space that tell the history of the area and the people who have inhabited this area since the late 1800’s. A constant at the museum is the exhibiting of many artifacts, photographs, and information available from many written sources.
In the past year, the museum has added numerous artifacts that have been donated to its collections, some of which are currently on display. A major exhibit on the businesses located along Maple Street in the 1950’s and 1960’s is being worked on and many photographs of students who were attending Lincoln School in that era can be viewed on the large board in the north building. There will be a bulletin board of Ku Klux Klan (KKK) articles/ads from the Stanley area. Also being commemorated at the museum, with a picture board, is the Stanley Auditorium, which is 100 years old this year. View many of the activities that have taken place at the auditorium over the years.
So plan a visit this year to see this treasure trove of community history.
