The Annual Stanley-Boyd Alumni Association Reunion (SBAA) was held on Saturday, October 1, at Stanley-Boyd High School gymnasium. It was a record year for attendance, as slightly over 200 registered and attended the 10th Annual Alumni Reunion. This year the Class of 1962 served as hosts and class representative Dale Lussenden welcomed attendees and amused his audience with tidbits of history related to the 1960’s. It was noted that 37 members of the Class of 1962 were in attendance.
President Ken Seufzer then called the SBAA Annual Meeting to order, followed by his leading the Pledge of Allegiance and asking for a moment of silence in memory of Marion Voytovich Walsdorf remembering her dedication to the Alumni Association and the leadership she provided in facilitating the Silent Auction. As the meeting proceeded, President Seufzer noted with appreciation the support SBAA receives from the school and District Administrator Jeff Konig. Seufzer then called on Secretary Eileen Stangret Samplawski and Treasurer Dave Jankoski. Samplawski provided a summery of the past year’s meetings minutes and Jankoski presented a report on the 2021 income and expenditures and reported assets totaling $65,431.26, as of December 31, 2021. Seufzer then called for, and had approved, a motion that the By-Laws limiting terms be dismissed to allow a Board Member to continue serving for another one-year term. Jean Geist Rygiel then presented the Nominating Committee’s Report. Eileen Stangret Samplawski and Kenneth Seufzer were elected to an additional one year term and Louis Eslinger (Class of 1990), Jenny Sallis (Class of 1987) and Joyce Kosar Freeman (Class of 1973) were elected to the Board for three -year terms. Anyone interested in serving on the Board can contact any Board Member or Officer. President Seufzer noted the tax advantages of making a donation directly from an IRA, or any tax de- ferred account, to a qualified 501 (c) (3) organization.
President Seufzer then began the Awards and Recognition portion of the meeting.
He began by recognizing outgoing Board Members Keith McCaffey, Carole Henkins Licht, James Reppert, and Tess Poulter Burlingame.
Seufzer then called on Dave Jankoski, who presented Educational Support and Promotion Awards to Jerry Dirkes and Gary Krueger, and Pam Jankoski Parker who presented an Honorary Member – Special Alumnus Award posthumously, recognizing Marion Voytovich Walsdorf, with the presentation made to Marian’s daughter Diane Walsdorf Montgomery. Jerry Dirkes taught in the Stanley- Boyd School District for 30 years and continues as a substitute teacher to present day. He has a litany of associations with coaching Stanley-Boyd athletes and is deeply immersed in community and church related activities. Gary Krueger taught in the Stanley-Boyd School District for 32 years, coached and provided services to athletes during those years, continues to volunteer help during Track and Cross County events, and is also deeply involved in service to his community. Marian Voytovich Walsdorf was remembered for her dedication to the development of the SBAA and her leadership in developing the reunion’s Annual Silent Auction, the organizations major fundraiser. Marian was remembered as a remarkable, helpful, caring lady.
Prior to lunch, Stanley- Boyd School District Administrator, Jeffery Koenig was present to address the attendees. He reported that good progress has been made in the after school program designed by teachers and assisted by high school mentors, that the SBAA helped finance, and that assisted stu dents who fell behind during the pandemic. He also noted, the just released, test scores of Stanley-Boyd Elementary students as being at, or near the top, in reading and math, when compared to CESA 10 schools.
His audience gave District Administrator Koenig a rousing round of applause following his presentation.
2022 Notables/Highlights: A huge Silent Auction, again filled the east side of the gymnasium and served as a fundraiser for the three $1,500 scholarships offered annually by SBAA. This year’s committee was lead by Kim Witt Nelson, she was assisted by a host of solicitors and over $4,000 was raised at the auction. Memorials were again accepted with many deceased alumni recognized with lite candles at their class tables.
Diane Herrick Meyer and Alvina Hera Depa coordinated the Memorial Project.
A review of the 2022 Attendee List indicated the oldest graduates in attendance were from the Class of 1949: Robert Anderson, Charles Cooney and Mavourneen Jankoski Weiman. At least two attendees, Jill Walsdorf Javis and Donna Peterson Reickoff, were unable to travel to attend because of hurricane related flight cancellations. The roast beef and chicken buffet dinner, provided by Boyd Catering, was given a blue ribbon rating by attendees.
Following the Reunion, the Board of Directors met for a short meeting. The Board Members present offered observations related to the reunion just completed, reviewed several attendee evaluations that called for water and coffee being available earlier, and heard a report on another successful Silent Auction. It was noted that the next meeting of the SBAA Board will take place on November 1, 2022, at the Stanley Area Historical Society at 6 pm.
The SBAA Board of Directors expresses their sincere appreciation to the administration, office staff, and janitorial staff for again helping make this year’s All-School Reunion another success.
