SAHS seeks donations to upgrade computer system

The Stanley Area Historical Society (SAHS) was founded in the mid-1970s. Now 49 years old, the society is seeking help with obtaining newer computer hardware, to better handle the conversion of physical records to digital format, as well as gathering material from old newspapers. Its last computer upgrade was in 2014.
“It’s crucial to note that some of our computers are not just old, but they are reaching a point where their performance is significantly compromised,” the SAHS writes in its summer 2024 newsletter update. “We need to address this issue promptly.”
Among the options identified for digitization work by the Society are two computers.
The following requirements are recommended by the museum’s technicians at Yellowstone Computing in Thorp who knows the unique needs of the programing and storage space needed. The estimated cost would be around $1,500 - to $2,000 (16GB RAM, an HDMI port and Windows 11 Pro with warranty, while the SFF has a different processor and 1TB (terabyte) performance SSD, as opposed to just 512 GB performance SSD)
“The second computer need is for a newer model Desktop Personal Computer that is not outdated and with basic requirements for office tasks only,” the SAHS writes, with the estimated cost for this around $500.
But that’s not all.
“We will also need to replace our lights used to photograph all artifacts which are now on tripods,” it says. “The legs are dangerous for our volunteers in a close floor area, especially when they may need to be moved frequently. Ceiling mounted lighting is safer and easier to adjust. We have yet to locate the exact equipment but appears to cost under $300.”
Those able to help the society with costs can send donations to SAHS, PO Box 142, Stanley WI 54768. Checks should be made out to SAHS.
Also in the newsletter, a new book is available, entitled “Vintage Views of Stanley” by David Plummer. Priced at $35 and including over 200 vintage black and white photos brought to life in color, supplies are limited. Copies can be obtained during the museum’s open hours through September, with mailed copies an additional $10 per book.
Housed at 228 Helgerson Street in Stanley, the SAHS is open Saturdays and Sundays from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. through October. Come by and stay a while!
