Service call coincides with Thorp Firemen’s Ball

It was all hands-on deck when a service call came into Thorp Area Fire and EMS Saturday afternoon around 3 p.m. Unfortunately, it was too late once firefighters got on scene.

“There wasn’t much we could do when I got on scene and the roof was already down,” Thorp Area Fire Chief Paul Skibbie said Saturday of the garage fire in Butler township.

Coinciding with the 74th Annual Firemen’s Ball as founded in 1948 with a gap year for COVID, the fire several miles south of
Thorp off County M in Butler dampened the day somewhat, even as light snow fell Saturday afternoon into Sunday. The garage was a total loss.

“Unfortunately, a total loss,” Skibbie said of the fire Saturday in Butler township. Few other details were available, while both Owen-Withee-Curtiss and Stanley provided mutual assistance on the call.

As to the Thorp Area department fundraiser going on in town, Cindy’s played host to the Cynor Classics as well as DJ Dinka, with songs in both Polish and English along with a boot raffle. Food and drink were provided at the event as well.

“A big thanks to all the businesses who donated,” Skibbie said of the fundraiser, with proceeds from the event to go towards fire and ambulance equipment, including a potential gas meter to help the department check for certain gases at a site. As to interest in fire merger, there was also news.

“I know they’re interested in looking further into it to see what Boyd and Stanley are getting together,” Skibbie said of the Thorp Fire District, though no committee had been put together as of the present.
