Stanley Train Depot 1906 – 2022

Potentially already down by the time this is read, the Stanley Rail Depot was due to be taken down Tuesday July 19, 2022, after suffering damage in last December’s tornado. The move follows the removal of the former building for Wundrow’s Auto Repair (also damaged in the tornado), a building in the northeast corner of First and Emery, as well as a residence at 211 East Maple, the last condemned in the aftermath of last December’s weather. Seen above from left to right, city public works employees Dick Fredrickson, Greg Steinke, Roy Fredrickson, and public works operator-in-charge John Hoel cut away the black iron fence marking the rail right-of-way. Owned by the City for insurance purposes, the south half of the depot building is within the rail rightof- way. Additionally, the city did not receive any FEMA dollars to repair or save the depot, overall damages from last December not meeting the federal threshold for aid. The brick depot came to Stanley in the aftermath of the May 18, 1906 fire, being built by Wisconsin Central Limited, and closing in the 1960s. Photo by Joseph Back.
