Members of the Stanley Truck Pull & Rodeo (STPR) presented a proposal to the City Council at the January 20th meeting requesting permission to place a 40-foot shipping container from Stanley Container Storage along the west side of the armory building in Chapman Park. The STPR believes that having the container on-site would improve both safety and efficiency by eliminating the need to move or store STPR equipment off-site. To ensure the container blends in with its surroundings, the group plans to place a gravel pad, install landscaping, and collaborate with the Stanley-Boyd High School Art Club to paint a mural on the side of the container to “enhance curb appeal.”
As the STPR currently utilizes the City’s armory building for storage, STPR member Jack Leja asked if they could come to an agreement with the City to continue using the armory building for STPR-related items.
“We need the armory building for city stuff,” answered Henke. He noted that the armory building is needed for city storage needs, including lawn mowing equipment that needs to remain at Chapman Park for easy access. Henke also mentioned that several other city items are currently being stored outside, which the city aims to avoid in the future.
The proposed location near the armory building raised concerns about suitability, with Henke suggesting inside the rodeo grounds as an alternative. Leja proposed a spot near the east entrance toward the lake, just outside the fence, but Henke worried about potential vandalism in that area due to its lack of enclosure.
After further discussion, the Council and STPR representatives agreed to meet at the Rodeo grounds at a future date with select council members and city workers to explore potential locations for the storage container, ensuring a solution that works for both parties.
