A Thorp area man is alive after getting lost and deciding to cut through the woods in the Town of Butler last week.
Duane Smith, 67, was driving his truck when he got stuck in the area of South Butler Road and Middle Butler Forest Road. Smith called his sister at 6:30 p.m. to relay the situation and to say that he was lost. His phone, then lost power.
The area where Smith became stuck is located south of the Blue Swamp State Natural Area between Dickerson Avenue and County Highway H. The area is bisected by the south fork of the Eau Claire River.
With temperatures in the heavily wooded area in and about Rock Dam dropping below freezing overnight, a search was launched that included Thorp Area Fire and Ambulance, the Town of Butler, Clark County Sheriff’s Office, Wisconsin DNR, Clark County Mounted Search and Rescue Team, Clark County Drone Team, Marshfield LifeLink Helicopter, Wings of Hope Search and Rescue, as well as Loyal Officer Schar with his K9 in an effort to locate Smith.
Duane was found at 3:02 a.m. on Willard Road the next morning, reportedly in good spirits. The Clark County Sheriff’s Office would like to thank everyone involved in the search last week.
