The Thorp Courier
Groundbreaking for the Thorp Veteran’s Remembrance Park took place on Saturday, October 15. The 9 am ceremony occurred at the corner of Hill and Adams Street, adjacent to Conway Park. Plans include site preparation this fall, and then moving forward with construction in late spring or early summer of 2023. In the interim, community members are encouraged to submit names of Veterans who have a “Thorp Connection.” +++ The Thorp City Council at their Monday, October 10 meeting passed an Ordinance – “Temporary Portable Storage Containers Regulated.” +++ In honor of National 4-H Week (October 2-8), the Reseburg Ramblers 4-H Club set up a display at Fairbridge Inn. +++ Thorp 8th grade students harvested 27 pounds of lettuce this year from the school greenhouse hydroponic system. +++ From Memory Lane Column 50 Years Ago (1972): Owner Walter Welgos is pictured in front of the new IGA building in Thorp. The Welgos’ were preparing for the stores Grand Opening, which included free pop all three days and registration for winning a bicycle, two fishing rods, two radios, and an electric fondue set.

Here is the clarified Cadott School District cellphone guideline as shared with the Cadott School Board at their October 10 Meeting: Phones are allowed during classroom breaks and in the hallways, at lockers, during passing time, during lunch, and before and after school, with student handbook rules applying. Phones are not allowed during instructional periods and need to be put away and silent during those times. +++ At their September 26 meeting, following a public hearing where no one appeared to object, the Cornell School Board approved a waiver request for an early school start date for the 2023-2024 school year. The start date was not set but the board was advised by administrators to set the date before January 1, 2023, thus allowing families to set in place vacation planning. +++ It was noted by the Lake Hol- combe District Administrator Kurt Lindau, at the school district’s annual meeting, that for the second year in a row the state has not provided an increase in per student revenue. “This is going to create future budget challenges for all Wisconsin school districts.” +++ In a Dunn-St. Croix Conference showdown the Spring Valley Cardinals handed the Cadott Hornets a 28-13 football loss. Cadott is 4-2 in league play.
Bloomer Advance
The 45th Annual Bloomer Woman’s Club Art and Craft Fair was held at Bloomer Elementary School on Saturday, October 8. The gym, main hallway and cafeteria of the school displayed the talented work of vendors while attendees shopped for gifts for others and themselves. +++ The allure of crafters, food trucks and live entertainment brought record breaking crowds to Bloomer for the Third Annual Fall Craft and Food Fest. Bloomer’s Main Street had over 60 crafters/artisans and, multiple food trucks and featured celebrity Chris Kroeze. Free parking was offered at the Bloomer High School’s parking lot with the excitement of a short hayride to and from the event. The fall event brought thousands of smiles to the faces of the businesses and attendees alike. +++ Talk about fulfilling a childhood dream! A Bloomer couple, Steve and Elaine Turner, fulfilled their childhood dream with the construction of a 12 foot by 21 foot free standing tree house on the back of their scenic property. Neither had a tree house during their childhood so they decided to build one during retirement.
The amazing part is they constructed the structure in two months.
O-W Enterprise An appeal by the Owen-Withee School District to overturn a WIAA rule that prevents the school from being able to participate in the 2022 8-Man Football Payoffs, has been denied 7-4. O-W withdrew from the Marawood Conference, where they had been placed by the WIAA, and went independent for the 2020 season. This made them ineligible for playoffs for two years. They will be eligible for playoffs again in 2023.

The communities of Greenwood and Loyal have decided the time has come to co-op and have a joint football team. Both school boards have approved a plan to begin a joint team, at the varsity level, for two years beginning in 2024. The co-op at the Middle School level will begin in 2023. +++ On a dreary Satur- day, September 24, the completion of the, “I Knew You in the Womb” Memorial was celebrated with a ribbon cutting. The memorial at the Neillsville City Cemetery consists of a statue of an angel weeping over an empty baby crib. The plaque reads, “We remember the babies born sleeping. Those we carried but never held. Those we held but could not take home. Those who came home, but could not stay.” The memorial is intended to help provide closure to grieving parents who have lost a baby. +++ At their September 27 meeting, the Neillsville City Council, based on the recommendation of the Parks and Recreation Board, voted to convert the city park tennis court into four pickleball courts. +++ The Neillsville School Board approved a bid of $154,710, that will lead to updating the school’s heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems. This is part of the boards continued plan in facility updates.

Brook Krause, an Augusta native, has opened a business known as Laser Fix LLC which is located at 130 S. Barstow, in downtown Eau Claire. The business offers laser hair reduction, a process where energy from a laser through the skin disables the hair follicle. She is certified and licensed in such treatment, after graduating from college. +++ Mulligan’s Bar and Grill in Augusta has a new facade that shows its recovery from a fire that damaged it a year ago.
Mondovi Buffalo County News
Saturday, October 15, Mondovi celebrated their fourth annual “Oktoberfest.” A packed schedule of events/activities were scheduled for all ages, from morning until late evening. +++ The City of Mondovi recently met with state DOT representatives to discuss their plans for reconstruction of 1.8 miles of Highway 10 roadway through the city. The city plans to do a complete replacement of utilities along the route. The city was advised that the project could be pushed off further than 2028 due to funding reductions.
