D.R. Moon Library launches Donor Spotlight Series to celebrate community support

The D.R. Moon Library is proud to announce the launch of a new donor spotlight series recognizing the community members whose generous financial contributions have helped make the library project possible. This series will highlight individuals and families who have invested in the vision of an up-to-date, welcoming space dedicated to learning, connection, and community growth. The first installment of the series honors the donors who stepped forward early, demonstrating their commitment to the importance of accessible educational resources and a strong public library for future generations. Each spotlight will share the story of how local support—from both individuals and organizations—has played a vital role in turning the D.R. Moon Library project from an idea into a reality.
“The D.R. Moon Library exists because of the people who care deeply about our community,” said Library Director, Elizabeth Miniatt. “This series is a way of saying thank you and showing how each contribution is helping build a library that will serve everyone for the next 125 years.”
The first spotlight features Walter Wartolec; Walter and his wife Marie were the very first supporters of the library expansion project over a decade ago. They knew that the D.R. Moon Memorial Library needed space to grow and expand and they were willing to take the first step towards that goal with the library board. To honor their commitment and support, the community room in the new library will be named The Walter and Marie Wartolec Community Room.
“I had the resources that I worked hard for,” Walter said, “to purchase the house to the west of the library and had it readied for an expansion.” He was born on a farm in Eidsvold, an area between Stanley and Thorp. Being a voracious reader, he found himself going to the library often. Walter said, “I spent a good bit of time in the D.R. Moon Memorial Library as I grew up.” Petri Borge, a longtime librarian, had also encouraged him to read. “The library has served me well through time,” Walter said.
Walter served in the Army Reserves for 27 years. He used the time he spent in the Reserves as an opportunity to expand his knowledge and experience. It was in the Boston area that he met his wife, Marie, while serving at Fort Devens. Walter shared, “I am excited that the library will be here for generations to come for people who love to read. I hope that it will be the impetus for them to go on with their education. I have attended many universities from coast to coast and it is through education that I was blessed with the resources that I have.”
Additional donor spotlights will be released throughout the coming months as the library counts down to the completion of the project in Summer 2026. We invite you to join us in celebrating the collective effort that has helped make this dream of an expanded and restored library into a reality, and consider adding your own support to this historic project.
