Regionals loss closes out season to be proud of

It was a team effort by the Stanley-Boyd Girls Varsity basketball team versus Colby Unfortunately, even the best of team efforts doesn’t always result in a victory on the scoreboard, with the Oriole girls losing to the Hornets by just four points at 69 – 73 when the buzzer sounded.

With Aaliyah Moore, Leslie Derks, Emily Brenner, Kayte Licht, Hannah Hause, Lily Hoel, Teagen Becker, Tina Benson, and Mallory Eslinger all picking in with points to the scoreboard, the loss to Colby February 9 at the Hornet’s home base effectively closed out an Oriole season that saw both ups and downs.

Not that it’s any consolation, but Colby advanced to face Neillsville at home three days later, coming away with its own loss, 45 – 61. With the season effectively over, it’s worth a look back on how things stand, and each player’s contribution.

Leading in points scored would be Lily Hoel, with 17 games and an average point score per game of 14.7. Following closely on Hoel in this respect is Teagen Becker, with 10.1 points per game over 17 games played. Third place for points scored goes to Emily Brenner, with an average of 6.6 points and 16 games played this season.

Also coming in for mention in the points department is Mallory Eslinger, with a 4.9 point game oaverage and 11 games played. Following Eslinger is Leslie Derks with 15 games and and an average of 4.9 points scored in each one, then Hannah Hause with 16 games and an average of 4.5 points per game. Kayte Licht coems in with 16 games and a points per game average of 3.4, followed by Aaliyah Moore with 13 games and 3.1 points for each one. Additional stats can be found at wissports.net.

Switching from points to the rebound equation, many of the same names are involved, with Emily Brenner getting 5 per game over 12 games total, whiel Lily Hoel gets 4.8 over the same 12 game interval.Teagen Becker’s rebounds per game stand at 2.6 for the 2020-21 basketball season, while Aaliyah Moore took 1.9 rebounds. Kayte Licht, Leslie Derks, and Hannah Hause each took 1.8. Mallory Eslinger meanwhile, took 1.4 rebounds per game.

Shifting to and the less prominent but still important contributors to the Oriole girls team effort, Sierra Close scored one assist this year, while Emme Felmlee took one offenive and one defensive rebound respectively. Tina Benson took one offensive rebound and three on defense, while Jessica Hazuga had two defensive rebounds to her scorecard this season. Jade Fredrickson (going to UW-River Falls for track) likewise had two defensive rebounds this season. Once again, more information is available by going to wissports.net. Here’s to a great season!
