Village Board votes to renew police agreement

Pending a similar vote from the Stanley Common Council, the two party municipal police agreement between Boyd and Stanley has been reaffirmed.

Meeting at its regular board meeting Tuesday, Dec. 5, the Boyd Village Board voted to renew the joint agreement by a unanimous roll call vote in favor of the agreement.

Prior to the regular board meeting, meanwhile, a special sit down took place Thursday Nov. 28 to iron out details.

Calling in Stanley Police Chief Lance Weiland, the Boyd Village Board sought to clarify on communication and contract details of the joint agreement between Stanley and Boyd.

Among the details covered Nov. 28 were concerns on overall communication and staffing since the resignation of officer Shaun Starck to go elsewhere, with Starck being initially hired for the new position that the agreement created. The agreement calls for an officer in Boyd approximately 30 hours a week, while Weiland shared at the meeting that this was treated for scheduling purposes as 120 hours a month, due to the department working 12 hour shifts. Questions of whether 30 hours per week could be the average and how Starck’s resignation had affected the wages and benefits picture also came up. Weiland later filled in the Stanley Council in his Dec. 4 bimonthly report.

“On Wednesday, Nov. 29, 2023, I attended a board meeting in Boyd regarding our contracted services agreement. The conversation centered around our recent short-staffing and how that has affected service and expenses. I shared with the village board where we have seen savings over the past few months due to staffing changes.” Sharing his belief that the savings should be shared, Weiland went on. “Simply put, if $5,000 in direct savings were experienced and the Village of Boyd paid 75% of that cost, they would recoup $3,750 of the %5,000. They will be providing an update that reflects that request and it will be available in time for a review and a vote at the December 18, 2023 council meeting, hopefully as part of an extended contract services agreement for 2024.”

The agreement now awaits a vote from the Stanley Council at its next Council meeting.
