Town of Worden voters will soon have an opportunity to weigh in on a levy increase proposal. The Worden Town Board approved a resolution at its regular October meeting looking to double the tax levy, pending input at a Nov. 14 budget hearing.
The move, which looks to increase the levy to approximately $198,000 from $99,000 (a 100 percent local tax increase) is being floated as a way to take care of town roads given the insufficient shared revenue now being received. The levy limit is set by outside governments limiting what the township itself can tax residents, but without sufficient shared revenue to offset the funding gap can result in issues, like road maintenance funding. A vote to raise the levy limit is one potential way around this funding gap, given voter approval. And the good news?
If passed, the money stays in Worden, rather than going outside of it.
“I’m going to be paying $600 more in taxes next year, but it’s all going to stay in the town of Worden,” Town Board Chair Earl Mathison said at the October meeting with regard to the proposed levy limit raise to address the roads.
The resolution to raise the levy limit now passed by the board, Worden voters will have a chance to give their input and vote at a budget hearing to take place Nov. 14 at 7 p.m. at the town hall, located at the southwest corner of the intersection between Koser Avenue and Eddy Road.
