Marie Wilbur, Clerk Freezin’ for a reason Stanley-Boyd Students Do the Plunge (photo) The Stanley-Boyd Newspaper Club (called “The Oriole Gazette”), along with other students and teachers, took the thrill of a lifetime this past Sunday as they jumped into a lake in Carson Park. The staff participated in the 2011 Polar Plunge held annually by the Special Olympics Wisconsin, which benefits their organization and the disabled people that it serves. The group collectively raised around $1,100, most of which was raised from local businesses. The club wishes to thank the following businesses for their contribution to the organization’s endeavors in raising money for Special Olympics: The Corner Bar; Kutzee’s Supper Club; Ace Ethanol; Plombon Funeral Home; Alberta May’s and Halterman Towing. Along with the many individuals that donated, this effort could not have been as successful as it was. The organization plans to have a team and support Special Olympics again next year. Moon Public Library, has been becoming modernized with the technology and additional resource that that the public needs to be part of a changing world. These resources are becoming scarce in local libraries because of funding issues, but nothing is holding the Stanley Library back…(story continues).

City Council Approves Bids Totaling $289,758 For City Shop Main Street Concept to be studied by local group The Stanley City Council met in chambers on Tuesday evening. Mayor Berzinski called the meeting to order at 8 p.m. All Council members were present: Pat McCrackin, Jim Erickson, Jack Radtke, Clarence Fitzsimmons, Bill Chwala, Scott Harris, Matt Kiraly and Mike Fazendin were also present at the meeting… Mr. Berseth informed the Council of the resignations of Police Chief Tom Thornton and Officer Chris Kowalczyk, which were accepted with regret. The Council thanked the officers for their service to the City of Stanley…The Council elected to advertise for a new Police Chief in several newspapers, beginning March 6, 1991 through March 26, 1991. It was noted by a Council member that interest in the position has already been expressed.

50 Years Ago March 18, 1971 Page 6 wedding Announcement: Jackie Shilts—Bernie Endvick Repeated Vows February 20 (photo by Daniels Studio) On Saturday, February 20, Miss Jackie Shilts and Bernard Endvick were married in a quiet ceremony. The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Teddy Shilts of Rt. 3, Stanley and the groom is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Marvin Endvick, Rt. 2, Boyd.

For her wedding the bridge chose a dress of white embossed satin with a high neckline and long sleeves which came to a point at the wrist and a long train. Her veil of tulle was held with a crown of tiny seed pearls and she carried a bouquet of red and white roses.

Mrs. Ronald Shunk was the matron of honor and Miss Joan Shilts was the bridesmaid. Their gowns were orchid sheer over satin and they carried bouquets of mixed flowers. Attending the groom were Ronald Shunk, brother-inlaw of the groom, and James Gindt, a friend.

The bride’s mother attended her daughter’s wedding in a navy blue dress with black accessories and the groom’s mother wore an orchid double knit dress with brown accessories.

A reception was held at the Edson Pavilion for about 500 relatives and friends and a dance was held there in the evening.

Both the bride and groom are graduates of the Stanley- Boyd High School. The couple are at home on the groom’s farm on Rt. 2, Boyd.

Gaffney Named Acting Postmaster (photo Arthur Gaffney) ART GAFFNEY will be the new acting postmaster in Stanley, effective this weekend.

Rites Saturday At Huron For Mrs. Janisewski FUNERAL SERVICES for Mrs. John Janisewski will be held Saturday at 10 a.m. from St. Mary’s Catholic church in Huron, with the Rev. Carl Meyer officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery (the church cemetery exists, the building is gone, having been closed in the late 1960s. Today only St. John the Baptist Orthodox is left, a Presbyterian church also having closed. Huron is located near the junction of G and S, in Colburn). Other front page obits: Mrs. Mike Sloboda of Colburn and Victor Gereau of Gilman. Services for Mrs. Sloboda were at St. Mary’s in Stanley (later reunited with St. Anne’s as Holy Family, now part of All Saints), while services for Mr. Gereau were held at Sts. Peter and Paul church, in Gilman.

Will H. Conrad, Medford Publisher, Killed In Crash Will H. Conrad, 62, veteran weekly newspaper publisher, and for the last 32 years publisher of the Medford Star-News, was killed last Thursday morning when the car he was driving struck a concrete abutment six miles east of Abbotsford on highway 29.

STANLEY HIGH TEAM WINS SECOND PLACE In Eau Claire District Tourney, Lose Championship Game, By 25 – 23 Score (By Geo. Follien) …A highly under-rated Stanely High school basketball team upset the pre-tournament dope, by winning their way into the finals of the Eau Claire District tournament, last week, only to lose out the championship game with Chippewa Falls, by a 25 – 23 score. They had defeated the Chippewa team twice during the season.

NATIONAL NEWS Railroad unions are promoting a movement to secure annual vacations with pay.

The Eau Claire Café, closed for several months by a strike, was reopened last Saturday.
