A car in the parking lot at Holy Assumption in Lublin Saturday showed that Orthodox Easter (called Pascha) wasn’t being forgotten this year. Due to a difference in calendar dates, local Orthodox Christians celebrated the death and Resurrection of Christ from April 30 to May 2 this year. Originally an Eastern-rite Catholic parish, Holy Assumption is today a member of the Orthodox Church of America (OCA), making the switch in the 1950s, per its website. The website for the wider OCA, meanwhile, is www.oca.org, while Eastern-rite Catholicism (area Catholic churches are Western-rite) can be learned of in more depth at www.byzcath.org. Orthodoxy in Russia and Slavic lands dates to 988 A.D. and immediately prior, when Prince Vladimir determined that his people were to be Orthodox. Suppressed initially under Stalin with churches turned into KGB centers and jails, the Orthodox faith rose again when Communism fell in 1991.
