Thorp donors, workers and supporters of the American Red Cross Blood Drives received a certificate of recognition for collecting 480 units during five drives. +++ With spring comes an exciting new sporting opportunity for Thorp area kids – trap shooting. The team is starting off strong with 16 members and four coaches who will be teaching them the ways of trap shooting and firearm safety/responsibility. +++ The 16th Annual Thorp Thrift Sales will be held Friday and Saturday May 21-22. +++ Former Stanley resident John Lencz, was recently honored for 60 years of membership in the Lublin American Legion Post #547. +++ From The Thorp Courier Memory Lane column: 100 Years Ago 1921: Ninety-million nine-hundred and eighty-four-thousand dollars ($90,984,000) was the value of cheese produced in Wisconsin in 1919 and that mostly in 30 counties.

Cornell’s new Police Chief Glenn Rehberg is looking forward to relocating his family to Cornell (from Madison). One of his goals is to have people feel safe and secure in their small town. In the future he is planning “Meet the Chief” events, to get to know more people. +++ The Cornell City Works Committee has approved the purchase of a 2007 International truck with a 12-foot plow, stainless steel sanding unit and wing, from the Chippewa County Highway Department for $21,000 (what the county would receive as a trade-in). +++ By a vote of 5-2, the Cadott School Board approved the bid of Shay Painting for $12,800 to paint the high school gym as a part of the retrofitting project taking place this summer. +++ The 2021 Cadott Junior Prom was held on Saturday, April 17, and took place at the Barn on Stoney Hill. +++ Through a community-funded effort, high school students at Lake Holcombe were treated to Prom on April 10, at Eastbay Lodge.

On Saturday, April 24, Boy Scouts Troop 11 of Bloomer, will be having a metal recycling drive. The profits will be used to help pay for badges, a summer trip and summer camp. +++ Dairy State Bank of Bloomer is celebrating its fifth anniversary. One of eleven locations, the local branch prides themselves on investing in the communities they serve. Lobby hours are M-F 8:30 am to 4:30 pm and the drive-in hours are M-F 8:30 am to 5:30 pm and Saturday 8 am to noon. +++ The Bloomer High School art teacher assigned her students to enter the Wisconsin Departmental of Transportation, Aeronautics Division art contest. Two students received second place ratings and one received an Honorable Mention. Second place earned each of the winners a $25 Amazon Gift Card.

On Tuesday. May 11, Prevail Bank of Owen is sponsoring a shred day, which will be raising money for the Owen-Withee Police K9 Fund. They will have a shredder onsite for the public to utilize and for each pound shredded the bank will donate a dollar to the K9 fund. +++ After another discussion on masks, or no masks, the Owen-Withee School Board voted to maintain their mask wearing requirement. One contributing factor was that many of the substitute teachers would not return if the mask requirement was lifted. +++ Withee Days on June 18-19-20 and the Owen Junior Fair on August 6-7-8 are both a go this summer.

MSA Professional Services, the city of Abbotsford’s engineering firm, is urging the city to apply for grant funding for water projects. There is a need to look for new sources of groundwater to keep up with demand. Five or six wells are reportedly needed to supplement the city’s existing 26 wells. +++ The Dorchester Village Board voted to add $1 million in cyber insurance, at a cost of $1,003. +++ Colby- Abbotsford Police officer Nathan Schreiber, a 17 year veteran, is resigning in order to become a detective with the Clark County Sheriff’s Department.

O-W Enterprise Friends of the Black River held a Black River Cleanup on Satruday, April 17 from 87 – 11 a.m. Clean-up volunteers launched their efforts from Owen, Greenwood and Neillsville.+++ A referendum on adding a thrid officer to teh Owen-Withee Police Department was defeated in the recent election. The Police Committee is now looking at how to fund the position by other means, including each municipality increasing their budgets for police protection in 2022.
