Bench made of recycle plastic presented to Boyd Lions

Meeting on Monday, October 9, at Debbie’s on Broadway, the Stanley Lions had Boyd Lions President Dennis McQuillan, as a guest. His visit provided an opportunity for the Stanley Lions to present his club with a bench that they will designate for use as they see fit.  Boyd residents bring their plastic bags to Hansen’s IGA for recycling and a Boyd business also provides some of the plastic collected. For every 500 pounds of plastic the Stanley Lions collect, a designated organization can receive a bench.  The most important aspect of collecting the plastic for recycling is that it doesn’t go into a landfill, where it never totally disintegrates.

During the business meeting, it was reported that Vision Screening Certification Training was held in Rice Lake on Saturday, September 16,  the majority of local testing has been done and now Lions helper Mary Dirkes and Lions Dorothy Goodman, Pat Jankoski, Betty Stopka and Mary Jo Winkler are waiting to receive their certificates.  Testing at a local daycare center and at the Boyd Early Learning Center have been scheduled.  Lions Jerry Dirkes, Pat Jankoski and Dave Jankoski reported on their attendance at the Septmber 25 Zone Meeting held in Cadott. Items of note were that Lions Clubs International Foundation (LCIF) needs continued support to help with worldwide disasters.  LCIF Giving Tuesday is November 28.  It was noted that one of the more recent donations from LCIF went to Morocco Earthquake Relief, in the amount of $100,000 and that donations from LCIF to communities in District 27 E-1 have amounted to $141,000.

Among the service projects in October will be the semi-annual cleanup of Highway 29 on Sunday, October 15 at 2:45 pm.  Four Lions are needed to help.  The Annual Sunset Homes Brat Supper and Bingo is scheduled for Tuesday, Ocotber 17, at 5 pm, with Lions Norm Christianson providing the leadership.  The Trunk or Treat event this year is being held at Chapman Park on Saturday, October 28, with Lion John Pozdell serving as chairperson.  Lion Dave Winkler indicated that with the beginning of bow season the Lions collection of deer hides has begun.  He reported placing the collection basket near the Car Wash at the Express Mart, 401 S. Broadway.  Lions are again accepting deer hides from successful hunters who are willing to donate them to a good cause. Hides collected by Lions Clubs throughout the state of Wisconsin last year yielded over $87,928, which allows individuals with challenges to attend Lions Camp Rosholt free of charge. Deer hides will also be collected at Inge’s Custom Meats and Zais Catering and Meats in Boyd.

In other business, tickets for the Lions Annual Christmas Raffle were distributed by Lion Winkler.  Only 500 tickets are sold at $10 each, and cash prizes are awarded each day from December 1-24.  Lions members have tickets for anyone interested in purchasing one.

Arrangements have been made to have a library board member attend the November Lions meeting to make a presentation on the developing plans for a library renovation and addition that will require a capital campaign.  The idea of the Lions challenging  other local organizations with their donation to the library project was introduced.  The Tilden Lions Club will be celebrating their 50th Anniversary on Novmeber 4, and will receive a gift of money from the Stanley Lions.  It was also voted to donate $500 to the Chippewa County Spirit of Christmas Program which distributes Christmas gifts to those in need in the Stanley-Boyd area.

Before adjourning Lion Luke Clow was announced as the attendance drawing winner.  He was unable to be present to collect the winning. The next meeting will be on November 13, at Debbie’s on Broadway.
