Bernier Commemorates Women in Construction Week

State Senator Kathy Bernier (R-Lake Hallie) is commemorating Women in Construction Week by honoring the important role of women in the construction industry. She is introducing a resolution designating March 7-14, 2021 as Women in Construction Week. This annual tradition began in 1953 when it was started by women in the construction industry.

“While women do not make up a large portion of the construction industry, they are a strong and growing segment in Wisconsin’s economy,” said Sen. Bernier. “They currently account for 3% of construction apprentices in the state, which is the highest level they have yet achieved.”

This is also an opportunity to highlight the growing opportunity for women considering a career in construction. The past year has been hard on women workers in other industries which have been especially impacted by the pandemic. In many areas, construction hardly slowed down in 2020 and with optimism already high for 2021, there is no better time for women to consider construction as a long-term career choice.

“Women are already working in a wide variety of construction related careers, everything from engineering to electrician, and hopefully more will continue to enter the industry in the future,” concluded Sen. Bernier. “Please join me in celebrating the contributions that women make to the construction industry in Wisconsin.”
