The American Red Cross is closely monitoring the evolving situation regarding the outbreak of the 2019 Novel Coronavirus. While the risk of contracting any coronavirus through a blood transfusion is extremely low, out of the abundance of caution, we are taking actions to help ensure the safety of the blood supply, our donors, recipients, volunteers and staff.
The Red Cross asks that all individuals who have traveled to China, and its special administrative regions, Hong Kong and Macau to postpone their blood or platelet donation until 28 days following return to the U.S. Beginning next week signage and donor educational materials on the coronavirus will be present at all Red Cross blood drives and donation centers across the country.
Blood donors like you help save lives and make things like this possible for blood recipients. The American Red Cross and NFL teamed up to help tackle a critical need for blood this January.
Thanks to our friends at the NFL, we were able to help surprise thirteen-year-old patient Braden Green, from South Carolina and his parents with a once-in-a-lifetime trip to Super Bowl LIV!
Braden is a brave student battling sickle cell disease. In 2015, Braden suffered from acute chest syndrome, the leading cause of death in sickle cell patients, and needed blood transfusions to survive. Upon the realization of the importance of donated blood to help sickle cell patients in need, Braden's mom, Brenda vowed to become an advocate for blood donations and has since hosted several blood drives for patients in need. Braden, and other patients, depend on you, the healthy blood donor!
Appointments are encouraged, but walk-ins are always welcome and needed. Don’t forget to do the RapidPass on March 9 before coming in to the drive, and save time!
