“It’s like they take all of your scores and add them up. And you can get up to a 40, and you had to get at least a 34 to go,” Jocelyn Hager of Boyd said of competing at AAU Nationals for gymnastics last summer in Savannah, Georgia. Hager said she became involved in gymnastics after a friend introduced her by practicing at recess.
“I had a friend in school that went,” Hager said, “and she always did gymnastics as recess.” That friend is now at level 8 of gymnastics competition.
At age 11, starting five years ago in her own right, Hager competed in level 5 last year, and has progressed to Level 6 this year.
As to Hager in 2021, she placed 1st all around at the Badger State Games and 1st all around at Wisconsin State AAU.
As to last year’s results at Savannah, Georgia, Hager said that she placed first on floor, second on bars, third all around, fourth on vault and fifth on beam.
So is there a favorite gymnastics event? "I probably like floor the best,” Hager shared recently of the sport she practices four days a week for three hours a day. “Floor is just like power tumbling, so you just kind of build up skills,” Hager said.
With eight or so competitions a year, the sport is arranged in levels and by teams, with level 6 (Hager’s current level) having eight people on a team. Gymnasts in each level are also split into age groups competing with gymnasts of similar age.
Following individual competition by team members, the scores of all are taken to come up with a team score. BOYD GYMNAST

Hager's floor score at Nationals placed her in America's top
100 at level 5 – 33rd in the country.
“I plan to keep competing in gymnastics, it’s a lot of work but I enjoy it!” Hager said.
