Boyd Lions provide lots of treats, make fire and ambulance department donations

The Boyd Lions are an organization that believes in helping out the community. To this end, they recently donated $1000 to Boyd-Edson- Delmar Fire and $1000 to Ambulance. Said Lions President Dennis McQuillan, “ October is fire prevention month, and the Lions made these donations to show our appreciation to all the volunteers for both the Fire and Ambulance services.”

That’s not all, though, as they also believe in helping kids have a good time. Halloween evening saw many tricks or treaters on the main street of Boyd. From 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. between Tolley’s Bowl and Bar and Red Wing Cabinets, members of the Boyd Lions club, some dressed up in costume, gave out about 180 bags of treats to area kids. All who came to get their candy were also treated to cookies and hot chocolate.

The Boyd Lions Club has been holding this Halloween event for over 50 years. Many older residents of our area (including myself) will remember when the party was held at the Boyd Public school. There would be a “costume parade” and judges would choose the best costume. And there was always plenty of candy given out. And if I remember correctly, part of the evening was the “call to the home”. After the party was over, members of the Lions club would call random homes of kids who had attended the party. If you were home, you won a fifty cent piece!

A big THANK YOU goes out to all those Lions who helped out with the event. This is the kind of community event that really brings people together, and reflects the Boyd spirit. If interested in joining the Lions, please contact Jeff/Deb Zais at 715667-3354, or Denny/Judy McQuillan at 715-667-3007. The next meeting will be December 14 at 6:30 at the Boyd Legion Hall.
