The Cornell School Board approved a DPI waiver request for school to start August 17. This is an attempt to provide an opportunity to build relationships with students and teachers, in the event school may have to close because of an outbreak of the virus. +++ After 28 years, the partnership between the Cornell Area Fire Department and Eagle Point Fire Department, may be coming to an end. Eagle Point will vote on the matter at their regular July board meeting. Both departments have stated their mutual respect for each other and will continue to provide assistance in the time of need. +++ Dogwood Doors, located south of Holcombe, makes wood doors with the buyer’s choice of wood. Alan Sabatke, owner, shapes the wood into the size and shape, required for the customer's structure. The core of his doors have insulation, which he states many wood doors do not have, thus making his design unusual.

On July 1, Daryl Bratz, a former Thorp High School business teacher and FBLA adviser, received the FBLA-PBL National Honorary Life Member Award, at the FBLA National Conference. With COVID-19, the conference was conducted virtual and there were 10,500 delegates watching from around the country. +++ Despite the Legion league canceling their season due to COVID-19, teams have gotten together to organize summer baseball. Play started on Monday, June 22. So far Thorp has beat Edgar and Marathon (once in a double header) and lost to Greenwood and Marathon.

Bloomer Advance

The Bloomer City Council has stood firm on the perspective developer of several lots in the city being responsible for the cost of sewer installation. The developer had requested the city consider cost sharing, as the city owns the property directly across from where the development would occur. +++ With 6.9 inches of rain in Bloomer on Monday, June 29, Willis Park playground equipment was flooded, the flood gates on the Duncan Creek Dam were opened at stage 2 and with the creek full, storm sewers backed up and water came out of some manholes.

O-W Enterprise Red Daisy Girl will soon be opening in downtown Owen. Carey Hargot is expanding her hobby into a full-fledged business at 130 N. Central Avenue. Carey will be able to create specialized/ personalized designs to go on shirts, coffee mugs, wine glasses, hats, Christmas ornaments, etc. She also envisions other uses for the property. She plans to open the business on August 15. +++ Due to COVID-19, the Owen-Withee All Class Reunion has been canceled for this year.

With amazing changes having been made at the Neillsville Mobile Home Court, the city council granted the trailer park its operating licenses. The license had been withheld on June 9, as a result of numerous ordinance violations. +++ On June 29, Express Lane changed over from a Holiday station to Marathon station.

Colby High School, Class of 2020, received their diplomas on Thursday, July 2, in an outdoor commencement ceremony on the school’s football field. +++ The owner of East Town Mall, which has lost Shopko and most of its other tenants in recent years, has filed a civil complaint against Abbotsford’s city administrator, accusing him of diverting potential new tenants. +++ The Abbotsford school board held a special meeting to discuss financing and floor plan options for the multi-purpose storm shelter that will be partially funded by a recently awarded FEMA grant. The district is hoping to use much of the dome-shaped structure for additional classrooms, for its growing student population.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the 2020 Owen Jr. Fair has been canceled. After multiple meetings and much discussion, it was felt best for the community to cancel the fair this year. +++ Among the good number of things happening in downtown Owen are a new coat of paint to the exterior of O-W Sports, the former NAPA Building will have a new business announcement next week, the Cozy Corner Cafe has new windows and a new bar to be known as Skunky’s will be opening.

Tri-County News The Osseo-Fairchild School Board voted to make immediate technological upgrade purchases as part of its long-term capital improvement plan. Included were purchases of computer laptops and smart boards for classrooms, along with improved Wi-Fi access points in the district's buildings and Ward Field (football/track). ++ Recharge has opened again in Augusta. The business barely opened and was forced shutdown because of COVID-19. While closed, owner Sara Gilbert, kept the business alive doing a lot of one-on-one selling of products. The store concentrates on the sale of nutritional shakes and smoothies. Available are 30 flavors of shakes and 20 tea flavors.

Mondovi Herald-News Mondovi was one of a few towns celebrating the 4th of July in a big way. Saturday, July 4th, events included an EMS Run in the morning followed by two parades – the Kiddie Parade and the Grand Parade in the afternoon. The days celebrations included a veterans’ gathering, and activities at Mirror Lake including a craft fair, live music, and fireworks at dusk. +++ A brief groundbreaking ceremony was held on Thursday evening, June 25, to kick- off the new Wastewater Treatment Plant. Participants were city of Mondovi leaders and company representatives associated with the building and engineering of the new facility.

If football is allowed, the Black River Falls Tigers will be returning to a Coulee Conference this fall. Also returning will be Galesville-Ettrick-Trempealeau (GET) along with Arcadia, Viroqua, and Westby. La Crosse Aquinas and Altoona have been assigned to the Coulee Conference for football.

An Overview

School districts across the area, and state, are having discussions on how to reopen their schools and establishing guidelines that will be followed. While looking at different ways, they are looking at the safest manner in which to accomplish the fall opening. The Department of Public Instruction has released guidelines for districts to follow and shape their own plans. +++ The 2020 Iola Car Show has been canceled, but to help support future events, on Saturday, July 11, the public is being invited to participate in a Rally. Staging of cars will begin at 8 am and a cruise through the grounds will take place at 10 am. Then cars will take to the open road, for a 60 mile tour of Waupaca County communities. Participating vehicles will be charged a $15 admission price. The Iola Car Show normally draws 100,000 people each year.
