Cadott’s new base sewer rate will be increased by the village board at their next meeting. The rate increase was recommended by the village auditor and is expected to cover the costs associated with handling the village sewage disposal. +++ Raffles and a dinner of pulled pork or chicken, served as a fundraiser for Justin Fredrickson, a member of the Cornell Area Fire Department, who was injured during a fire call. The local firefighters put on the benefit to help the family with expenses while Justin recovered. +++ The Cornell Food Pantry and the Feed My People Food Bank presented KJ’s Fresh Market in Cornell with a Certificate of Appreciation for their participation in a food rescue program. KJ’s donates any food they would normally dispose of, to reduce food insecurity and waste. KJ’s Fresh Market donated an equivalent of 16,812 meals. +++ On April 15, work began on the veteran’s memorial being built at Lake Holcombe.

The Thorp City Council has been informed that the Thorp School District is willing to help finance the cost of building a new pavilion/cabana at the city swimming pool.+++ The Thorp city cemetery is being expanded with the addition of 100 new burial plots. +++ Thorp will again have Whirlwind Sweeping handle street sweeping and leaf pickup. The contract calls for four visits in the fall and one in the spring. From The Thorp Courier Down Memory Lane 100 Years Ago (1921): A six team baseball league has been organized and is to be known as the Northern Wisconsin League, comprising the cities of Stanley, Owen, Greenwood, Loyal, Colby and Athens and will play a series of twenty games during the season.

The Bloomer EMT’s have a new power stair chair, thanks in part to $1,000 from a Security Health Plan Employee-Driven Corporate Giving grant. Each month, Security awards a grant to a charity, or organization, nominated by an employee of the Marshfield Clinic Health System. The device reduces chances of an injury to an EMT or the patient. +++ The Bloomer Rod and Gun Club thanked the public who supported their Pork Steak Feed. All 300 tickets were sold and everything went smoothly.
O-W Enterprise The Owen City Council, at the end of their Tuesday April 13 meeting, held a closed session. After a half hour, the council emerged and announced that City Clerk Michelle Kind had been given 24 hours to resign or she would be terminated. She was allowed to come in at 10 am the following day to collect any personal items in her office. An Editor’s Note, following the article with the above information, indicated that the clerk did not tun in her resignation. +++ A new pavilion at Crowley Park in Owen will provide a place for campers to congregate. +++ Meeting on Monday, April 12, the Owen-Withee School Board decided that face masks will be required until the end of the school year. The School Board also approved having the Junior Prom on Saturday, May 1, in the High School Gym. District Administrator, Bob Houts announced that they were planning to have one more meeting to finalize plans for the Dome Project.

Superintendent Sherry Baker reported to the School Board on Monday, April 19, that plans for the construction of the dome/storm shelter addition to the school and pool repairs are coming along, but are slower than she would like. She also revealed good news related to the donations the school distinct is receiving towards the two projects. Donations towards pool repairs are at $125,000 and donations/pledges for the dome project are at $150,000.

On Saturday, April 17, 18 people showed up for an Owen Earth Day Clean-Up which focused mainly around the Owen Mill Pond Park and Popple River Millpond trail. Volunteers who were also cleaning up along the Black River from points near Owen-Withee, Greenwood and Neillsvillle. +++ The old NFO cattle barn at Curtiss, has a new occupant. JBS Dairy Direct is the new company, which is prominently advertised by a 12-foot Holstein standing proudly near the facility. The new business is a receiving station, where farmers can drop off cattle to be slaughtered at the company’s Green Bay facility. +++ Artwork created by Owen-Withee High School students is now on display at the Withee Library.

The wrap up from the Friends of the Black River Clean-Up on Saturday, April 17, indicated there were 16 volunteers that helped in the Neillsville area, six in Greenwood and 16 in Owen, for a total of 38 volunteers. Collected were between 50 and 75 tires, an estimated 50 cubic yards of trash, more than a half dozen TV’s, a mattress, a refrigerator, a couple trailers of metal, water heater, a couple of water pressure tanks, and various other electronics. +++ The Neillsville school plan includes wearing masks through the end of the school year.

Harvestime South Church is at its new location in Eleva. The first full church service took place on the weekend of April 3 and 4. Over the past year, the 13,000 sq. ft. facility was converted into a church with dedicated adult, youth, and children’s spaces. Most of the work was done by the pastor and congregation members. Originally the congregation was in a Mondovi rental space, until the discovery of mold, which forced them to relocate to nearby Friendship Church, which loaned them space. +++ Fall Creek High School was named the winner of the Sportsmanship Award for the girls Division 2, 4 and 5 basketball tournament games held at the La Crosse Center.
Trempealeau County Times
On Thursday, April 15, Arcadia seniors participated in tree planting, trash pickup and other various beatification efforts at their school and at various parks around the community. The group also planted 50 white pine trees donated by Ron Wanek, founder and chairman of Ashley. The trees were planted along the north end of the school property.
Buffalo County News
The Town of Drammen, in Eau Claire County, is going to have a major broadband expansion project that will bring them reliable service. Tri-County Communications Cooperative of Strum and 24-7 Telecom, Inc. of Downsville will cooperate with the project, which will bring Fiber-To-The-Home broadband services across 30 square miles. +++ The Mondovi Elementary School recently received a fresh infusion of new books thanks to a $3,000 donation from Diana Pet Food of Mondovi. Books were selected from a Scholastic Book Fair and were distributed to 33 classrooms. +++ The Mondovi School Board voted 2-5 against a proposal to make mask wearing optional. Thus, the board affirmed continued use of face coverings.
