A car and buggy accident approximately 1/3 mile west of Copenhaver Avenue Sept. 22 has resulted in EMS transport with suspected serious injury for the horse and buggy driver, 21-year-old Emily Zimmerman.

The accident, called in to the Clark County Sheriff’s Office on Friday, Sept. 22 at 5:04 p.m. saw lanes closed for one hour and 22 minutes on Highway X opposite Trinity Vineyard Church, with traffic diverted to nearby roads. The area of the two lane road in which the crash took place does not allow for passing on the westbound portion of Highway X, as a hill obscures the view of oncoming traffic. Posted speed limit for the area is 55 miles per hour.

The Stanley Police, Thorp Police, and Thorp Area Fire and Ambulance assisted Clark County with the call response. Boyd-Edson-Delmar also assisted.

The crash report by Clark County indicates the crash took place when a black 2012 Ford Fusion operated by 36-year-old April Turenne of Thorp was negotiating a road curve westbound, striking the horse and buggy from behind. The horse and buggy then ended up in the north ditch with the driver ejected.

The crash report through Clark County indicates the Fusion being operated in an “inattentive, careless, or erratic manner” under driver actions. The report also indicates seat belts worn and airbags deployed, with the sedan towed due to disabling damage.

Alcohol and drugs are not believed to be a factor in the crash, with the report stating Turenne was “not distracted.” Environmental conditions included glare, the road otherwise dry and weather conditions clear.

As for the horse and buggy, the report indicates it was also negotiating the same curve uphill, being driven by 21-year-old Emily R. Zimmerman of rural Stanley. Zimmerman was ejected from the horse and buggy and transported by EMS Ground to Aspirus Stanley Hospital for airlift with suspected major injury. There was no contributing action to the accident on Zimmerman’s part.
