WILLYOUR CHILD BE AMONG THOSE PRESENT?

Parents are urged to recommend to their youngsters participation in the bicycle safety program to be held this Saturday morning.

The equipping of bicycles with special safety reflector tape is important in itself.

Your child’s bicycle, so protected, might some night prevent an accident. Application of the tape is free… WORDS WORTH REMEMBERING This learned I from the shadow of a tree that to and fro did sway against a wall: our shadow selves our influence may fall where we can never be. —Anonymous

Volume XLIV, Number 8 17 ½ months to Pearl Harbor, the Third Republic nears collapse… …After (French) Premier Renaud had asked President Roosevelt for the help of the American army and navy and the President had indicated it could not be granted, the Premier immediately resigned. Marshall Henry Petain, Vice Premier under Renaud, was elected Premier and a new cabinet was formed and the French government carries. But it will be short-lived and another government with the assistance (of Nazi Germany) will soon succeed it…The last of 60 navy bombers returned by the United States to the Curtisss-Wright corporation, were flown to France last week end. TRAGEDY AT NORTH FORK ON SUNDAY COSTS LIFE/ Young Girl of Thorp Drowned in Swimming Pool in View of Several Men/ A drowning occurred early Sunday afternoon at the swimming hole on the North Fork near the Thorp road when Miss Josephine Borowick of Thorp lost her life and from the reports brought from the scene of the tragedy, the death was unnecessary… A UNIQUE SCHOOL SOUVENIR The young people of South Worden school which is presided over by Miss Katherine Wright are probably the only district school in the state to issue a School Annual, a privilege which is usually claimed only by High Schools and Colleges. But these young people are not having their annual printed with half-tone illustrations and that sort of thing, bless you no! They are having the books made in blank at the Republican office then each member of the school will make his or her own annual record of the school’s activities by filling it with pen and illustrating it with drawings and kodak pictures. And when it is finished each will have a highly prized souvenir of school days, something that is entirely worthwhile.

GOOD TIME AT THORP./ The Reunion of Soldiers and Sailors has Been a Great Success. The entertainment good. / A Large Attendance of Stanley People Yesterday. Good Weather Contributes. / The center of interest this week has been at Thorp where the soldiers and sailor veterans of this section have been entertained by the citizens of Thorp at a reunion. What promised to be an oppressively hot week in the beginning turned into a delightfully cool season the last three days of the week which made the weather ideal for such an occasion.

The races yesterday afternoon were an attractive feature and gave many Stanley people their first opportunity to visit Thorp’s new Driving Park. The track is a good one and will be the source of much enjoyment to people of this section through the coming years.

The address by Hon. Ira B. Bradford was the greatest drawing card of the day’s attractions.

The Camp Fire in which the veteran guests participated last night was a very enjoyable feature but we go to press too (to) early to give a detailed account. The festivities close today. // DROWNED AT LONG LAKE/ Two Children of Banker A. B. McDonnel of Chippewa Falls Lose Their Lives./ They Were Bathing And Went Beyond Their Depth.
