With the yearly Spring thaw now drawing to a close, Chippewa County has announced that temporary weight limit restrictions on county- administered roads and bridges are to be lifted this April 15.
The weight restrictions, put in place to protect roadways as groundwater frees up underneath, will soon be superfluous as both temperature and local terra firma stabilize for the summer yet to come—however long or short, short or long it may be. The “In accordance with Wisconsin State Statute 349.16, the Chippewa County Highway Commissioner may 'impose special weight limitations on any such highway or portion thereof which, because of weakness of the roadbed due to deterioration or climatic conditions or other special or temporary condition, would likely be seriously damaged or destroyed in the absence of such special limitations,' the web posting on Spring Weight Limits at www.co.chippewa. wi.us says before going on.
“Each year, the Chippewa County Highway Department utilizes several frost tubes around the County to monitor roadway frost depths,” the website says, with a handy map with redlined thoroughfares showing where weight limits were in place prior to April 15 this year. Among the locally unrestricted county roads as far as weight limit are the following:
• County H from the Eau Claire border up to Highway 4.
• County MM from the eastern border with Clark all the way to its junction with County X past Cadott.
• County D from the Eau Claire border up to its junction with County W east of Cornell.
• County G, County S, and County V as they pertain to eastern Chippewa County.
• County O from the Stanley city limits all the way to its meeting with Highway 27 north of Cadott.
These are the roads as they pertain to county- administered ways of travel. Limits imposed by other governmental bodies on roads they do maintenance for, may still apply. For more information or if you have questions on these, contact your local municipal road officials.
