Junior Nevaeh Walters has been named Stanley-Boyd Athlete of the Week for her skill and dedication to the girls wrestling program. Nevaeh first started wrestling in elementary school, inspired by her family. She shared, “My family was what inspired me to start wrestling in elementary school because they said that I whoop up on all the boys.” Walters didn’t wrestle in middle school but returned to the sport as a high school sophomore. “I then came back in high school because I watched wrestling a lot and started to miss it,” she explained.
Being part of the girls’ wrestling program has been especially meaningful to her: “It means a lot to me to be part of this new opportunity for female wrestling because it pretty awesome.” She credits her support system for helping her overcome challenges: “There’s been multiple challenges I’ve faced along the way, but my family and wrestling team are what helps me overcome them. My family’s support means the world to me. And my team is what makes it fun and what makes me want to keep doing it.”
Reflecting on the season, Walters said, “The best thing about the season is that our team continues to get better every day and the girls team continues to grow.” Her personal goals are simple: “My personal goals for this season are just to continue to get better and make it as far as I can.” Walters also shared her gratitude for the support she receives from coaches, family, and teammates. “My family, coaches, and the team’s parents have supported and inspired me the most in this wrestling journey because they continue to show up and cheer. My coaches have helped me work on things and get better. They are willing to stay after to work on things. And overall, they just make the experience fun. I am definitely grateful to be a part of this team.”
Walters and the girls wrestling team have had a strong showing this season. At the 28-team Bluejay Challenge in Merrill, the girls team finished second overall and defeated D1 and #14-ranked Merrill, sending four wrestlers to the finals. Walters captured first place at 145 pounds, joining teammates Sierra Marten (126) and Zephyr Greenhow (113 JV) as finishers.
As the girls wrestling program continues to grow, Neveah Walters’s contributions are helping set the tone for future success and shaping the future of Stanley-Boyd wrestling through her hard work, perseverance, and commitment to building the program.
