Stanley-Boyd High School student Maiyah Hakes has danced her way into the spotlight as this week's Stanley-Boyd Athlete of the Week, earning recognition not only for her impressive talent, but also for her dedication, character, and leadership in the dance community.
Hakes began dancing at the age of 11 and has spent the last four years competing with Releve Dance Company at a high level. Most recently, she and duet partner Rose Hager swept their competition, earning First Overall, First in Category, a Judge’s Choice Award for “Perfectly Paired”, and a Platinum Award.
While the awards speak for themselves, it’s the passion and purpose behind Hakes’s performances that truly stand out.
“My favorite aspect of dance is the teamwork,” she shared. “Being with my team and making such precious memories is the absolute best feeling! I love being on stage and showing my personality through dancing.”
Her favorite styles—lyrical and contemporary—allow her to express deep emotion and move gracefully with the music. But for Hakes, it’s about more than just movement; it’s about meaning.
“My biggest inspiration is dancing for the younger kids and being a role model,” she said. “I also love to shine my faith through dancing hopefully inspiring so many other people!”
Colette Wirtala, owner/director at Releve Dance Company, had nothing but praise for the dedicated dancer.
“We are so proud of Maiyah and the beautiful dancer and person that she is,” she said. “She has worked so hard this season and really pushed herself to try new things and grow as a dancer. She is also an amazing teammate; always kind and considerate to other dancers and teachers.”
Hakes brings commitment and a positive attitude to everything she does, setting an inspiring example for fellow dancers.
“She is respectful, hardworking, dedicated, and just an all-around joy to have at the studio,” Wirtala commented.
Congratulations to Maiyah Hakes, this week’s Stanley-Boyd Athlete of the Week, for her artistry, work ethic, and heart. The Stanley-Boyd community is proud to cheer her on—both on and off the stage.
